We are hosting an informational open house in our NY offices on September 13th from 6:30 to 8:00 pm.  Please help us spread the word about our open house so that students can learn more about the unique M.D. program we offer.

The MSIH M.D. Program is a four-year medical program with excellent residency match rates at top U.S. programs and a strong focus on global health. Based in Israel during the first three years of study and taught entirely in English, our North-American-style curriculum incorporates everything students expect from a top-quality M.D. program — and then pushes them further to see beyond their own experience, culture, and country.  Students complete fourth-year clinical electives at Columbia University Medical Center, as well as other affiliated hospital locations in North America including Mt. Sinai.  The 2017 residency match rate was 90%.  Graduates practice in North America and worldwide.

Internship Opportunity: Maternal and Child Health

Position Summary:

The Institute for Family Health is committed to providing high-quality patient centered care to all. At our health centers, pregnant patients are offered a team of social workers, nurses, and providers that help women to navigate the complex health system in order to have healthy pregnancies and healthy babies.

The Maternal Child Health (MCH) Intern will assist the Maternal Health Advocate in coordinating the logistics of prenatal care for our patients, organizing the CenteringPregnancy program, and providing outreach to patients. Through this role, the MCH Intern will contribute to ensuring the quality of patient care in prenatal and postpartum services.

Specific Intern Responsibilities and Activities:

• Telephonic patient recruiting for Centering programs
• Assist with set up and organizing for CenteringPregnancy
• Outreaching to patients for appointments
• Updating the obstetrics information log and patient lists in the electronic medical record

Experience or skills preferred:

• Ability and desire to work in maternal and child health
• Ability to integrate into varied work environments
• Ability to work independently on tasks, take initiative, and be self-motivated
• Capacity to collaborate and work well in  teams
• Good written and oral communication skills
• Exceptional time management and organization abilities
• Spanish language strongly preferred
• Good computer skills (MS Word and Excel)

Patient Navigator Volunteer Program at Bellevue Hospital

Position title:  Patient Navigator Volunteer

Program Objective:

·         Provide Medicine/Geriatrics clinic with assistance in coordinating patient care and connecting patients with resources

·         Participate in efforts under study entitled “Transforming Health Care Systems through Interprofessional Training and Health Professional Team Development in Primary Care in Urban Underserved Settings.”

Responsibilities

·         Ensure that patients are able to easily participate in their care process, meaning patients are aware of where they are in the care process and patients are easily able to find the appropriate locations for the care they require

·         Compassionately coordinate and organize patient flow, including crowd control, queue management, and equitable service provision to all patients

Recruitment/Qualification:

·         Must be at least 18 years of age

·         Exhibit strong interpersonal skills and professionalism

·         wort least 3-12  hours of availability on weekdays (generally 8-11am or 12-3pm)

·         1 year commitment

·         Bilingual is a plus (Spanish, Mandarin, Bengali preferred)

·         We will screen applicants based of their resumes and cover letter and select candidates for an interview.

·         Upon clearance by Bellevue volunteer office, we ask volunteers to complete the CITI training tutorial and two Bellevue orientation sessions

Clinical Opportunity: Winthrop LIDA Birth Doula Project

My name is Deborah Rotunno, and I am one of the project coordinators for the Winthrop-LIDA Birth Doula Project. The Winthrop-LIDA Birth Doula Project is a coalition of women’s health practitioners at Winthrop University Hospital and Long Island Doula Association, Inc. (LIDA)-trained birth doulas seeking to improve birthing outcomes for mothers in our community. We are hoping to recruit and train individuals interested in offering continuous, evidence-based birth support to women in labor and their partners. The Winthrop-LIDA Project is a unique clinical opportunity for any student interested in:

-          Gaining hands-on, meaningful, clinical exposure

-          Empowering women to become agents of their bodies and health

-          Promoting mother and baby-friendly childbirth initiatives

-          Exploring birth doula work, midwifery, or obstetrics as possible professional trajectories 

Specifically, birth doulas provide emotional, physical and informational support to women in labor. The benefits of birthing with birth doulas are numerous, including:

-        Personalization and respect of individual birthing choices

-      Promotion of breastfeeding and maternal-infant bonding

-       Increased rates of vaginal delivery

-        Acknowledgement of birth as a natural process

-        Increased maternal satisfaction 

Volunteers will not only gain holistic exposure to the field of women’s health, but will also be fulfilled by their abilities to affect positive change in the diverse patient population they will serve.
