Opportunities for Pre-Optometry Students at SUNY Optometry

Eye-CARE Camp - Over the course of a three-day summer camp, Eye-CARE prepares prospective applicants for the rigors of the optometry school application process and health professions programs broadly. Eye-CARE simultaneously exposes participants to the dynamic future of the profession. A selective group of eligible participants will be sponsored to complete a FREE Kaplan "Live Online" OAT prep course proceeding the 3-day camp! Eligibility and further details can be found on our website here. We appreciate the support from VSP and Kaplan, Inc.

CSTEP Internship and Summer Academic Programs - For eligible NYS residents, SUNY Optometry's CSTEP Internship and Summer Academic programs are great opportunities for pre-health students to get hands on experience and explore one potential health profession, while getting professional development opportunities as well through our workshops and activities. The link below includes more information about each program (eligible candidates may apply to participate in both programs simultaneously).

SUNY Optometry Winter Open House

Registration for SUNY Optometry's Winter Open House is open at www.sunyopt.edu/openhouse. The event is scheduled for Thursday, January, 13 2022 from 9:30 AM - 1:00 PM. The event will be held in person with an opportunity to connect virtually.

Students attending in person are welcome to bring 1 guest. Any questions regarding the event should be directed to the General Admissions email at admissions@sunyopt.edu.

Greetings from SUNY Optometry! We are happy to announce a number of application and engagement opportunities for students to connect with us and learn more about our program and optometry this fall:

  • OptomCAS Fee Waivers - with the 2021-22 application cycle in full swing, our inaugural OptomCAS application fee waiver program aims to minimize potential financial barriers in the application process so that all candidates who wish to apply can.
  • Find it! - these virtual sessions aim to cultivate an intimate, open-style discussion among prospective applicants and various members of our community, showcasing different elements of the student experience they can find here at SUNY Optometry. Each session will cover a different topic and attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and share thoughts with members of our campus community.

Event: SHPEP Find Your Charge Through a Career in Optometry (Webinar)

In an effort to improve access to information and resources for students interested in the health professions, the SHPEP National Program Office (NPO) will be hosting the Find Your Charge Through a Career in Optometry webinar on Thursday, Sept. 16, at 6:00 p.m. ET. 

Optometry is a stimulating and rewarding career based in patient care and the most highly valued human sense: sight. Join us and meet five Doctors of Optometry and learn about different modalities you can pursue in optometry and how you can have the opportunity to change lives every day. Students seeking to make a real difference will find no better career than optometry.

Please feel free to join the live session and share the registration link with your network. SHPEP webinars are always recorded and posted on the SHPEP YouTube channel within a week of the live session. Please subscribe to our channel to receive important and timely information regarding SHPEP and the health professions.

Summer Health Professions Education Program Test Preparation Sessions

In an effort to improve access to information and resources for students interested in the health professions, the SHPEP National Program Office (NPO) will be hosting two upcoming webinars designed to assist students in preparing for the Dental Admission Test (DAT) and Optometry Admission Test (OAT). A session on the MCAT exam has been recorded and can be viewed at the link below.

SUNY Optometry CSTEP Spring Internship & Summer Academic Program

SUNY Optometry is excited to announce that CSTEP Spring Internship and Summer Academic Program applications are now available. The internship program is a great opportunity for pre-health students to get hands-on experience, explore the optometry field and participate in professional development workshops and activities. The Summer Academic Program introduces students to the optometry school curriculum, while offering two credits which can be used as elective credits upon enrolling at the College of Optometry. Students may choose to apply to either or both of the programs.

The New York State eligibility requirements to qualify for CSTEP are:
  • Be a New York State resident
  • Full-time college or graduate student 
  • Identify as a member of a historically underrepresented group in STEM (African American, Hispanic/Latinx, American Indian or Alaska Native) or be economically disadvantaged as per New York State's Income Eligibility Criteria
The deadline to apply is Friday, April 10, 2020.

UC Berkeley Fall Optometry Events

UC Berkeley School of Optometry invites prospective applicants to participate in in-person and virtual events to learn more about the profession this fall!

This in-residence, 5-day program will give students interested in pursuing graduate studies and a career in optometry:
  • an in-depth look at the profession,

  • an immersive experience on the Berkeley campus.
Opto-Camp is open to all, with priority given to students currently enrolled in undergraduate studies.

Ohio State Optometry I-DOC Program

The 13th annual I-DOC (Improving Diversity in Optometric Careers) program will take place on the campus of The Ohio State University from July 14-17th.  I-DOC is an intensive four-day residential program that introduces participants to the profession of optometry. The purpose of I-DOC is to attract underrepresented minority undergraduate college students to careers in optometry.  Applications are now available at http://go.osu.edu/I-DOC2019 and will be accepted through May 3rd.

Thanks to underwriting by Vision Service Plan (VSP), there is no registration fee for the program. Also, all meals, housing, airfare, transportation, and activities are included.  Thirty students from across the United States will be selected to participate.

CSTEP Internship Program at SUNY Optometry

Applications are currently open for two opportunities to learn more about the profession of optometry at SUNY Optometry, located in midtown Manhattan. SUNY Optometry's CSTEP Internship Program is designed to support New York state residents who identify as members of a historically underrepresented group or who come from an economically disadvantaged background.

The Spring Internship program runs from June 4 - June 14, 2019. This is an exploratory program, designed to let students shadow in clinics, visit private practices, go through professional school readiness workshops, network with students and faculty, and do a research presentation.

The Summer Academic Program meets every Tuesday between June 4 and July 30, 2019. In this academic program, students will get a chance to take introductory optometry curriculum courses with SUNY Optometry faculty, for 2 elective credits.  They also get a chance to shadow one day in the clinic.
