Position Overview

Fall 2026 PAVERS Program at NYU Langone ED

The application to our Fall 2026 Patient Advocacy Volunteer Program in Emergency Room Services (PAVERS) has officially opened! 

PAVERS is offered in the fast-paced emergency departments at NYC Health+Hospitals/Bellevue, NYU Tisch Hospital, and NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn. In the ED, PAVERS volunteers are given the opportunity to explore the reality of a career in medicine as they provide patient support during procedures, advocate on behalf of non-English speakers, comfort family members and loved ones, and establish deep relationships with patients. In addition to physician attendings, residents, RNs, and NPs, our volunteers engage in meaningful conversation with patient care technicians, behavioral health assistants, certified nursing assistants, and hospital janitorial staff. 

 

The true cornerstone of the PAVERS program is, however, patient advocacy. Our emergency departments serve those whose medical diagnoses are complicated by homelessness, food insecurity, undocumented immigration status, and mental health crises. Through hands-on experience in one of New York City’s level 1 Trauma Centers, our volunteers are exposed to numerous aspects of patient care and advocacy while working closely with clinical staff.

 

PAVERS volunteers must commit to two consecutive semesters of two weekly 4-hour shifts from 8am-12pm, 12-4pm, 4-8pm, or 8pm-12am, as well as a cohort-wide, once-per-month Sunday meeting.  Summer 2026 ECHO Interpreter Program is a 9-week immersive experience designed for undergraduate, gap year, and post-baccalaureate pre-health students.

ECHO is a student-run free clinic in the Bronx, NY, dedicated to serving uninsured patients. This program offers a unique opportunity to:

• Enhance medical Spanish skills through real patient–doctor interactions.
• Connect with current medical students and gain insights into the operations of a student-run clinic.
• Contribute meaningfully to the health and well-being of the community.

Program Details:

• When: Saturdays, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM, from June 6 to August 8, 2026 (closed July 4)
• Volunteers will be assigned 3–4 shifts during the term.

It is comprised of eight hospitals, 145 outpatient locations, nearly 5,000 physicians and more than 38,000 employees. This position is located in the William Beaumont University Hospital campus in Royal Oak, near Detroit, Michigan. Our group uses magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to discover biomarkers for many different types of cancers and diseases, including prostate cancer, lung cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease. Our projects include nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis of biofluid samples (blood, urine, etc.) and MRI of tissue samples from patients and animals, with the goal of developing less- or non-invasive diagnostic tools for clinical implementation.

The Research Technician will be an integral member of the team and make important contributions to many research activities. As such, responsibilities include:

1. Collect tissue samples and conduct NMR analysis of urine, blood, and/or cell media,

2. Process raw data to create analyzable spectra, and perform data analysis using various software and platforms,

3. Review medical records from clinical subjects to correlate spectral data with pathological findings and disease symptoms,

4. Conduct literature reviews, write manuscripts, and assist faculty in grant reviews,

5. Maintain regular communication with collaborators and facilitate efficient sample collection, delivery, and analysis,

The Washington University School of Medicine Pediatric Student Research Program

St. Francis Hospital Clinical Scholars Program

The Clinical Scholars Program aims to provide three paid research internships to recent college graduates who plan to pursue an advanced clinical degree in medicine (MD or DO) or biomedical research (PhD or dual-degree). NYU Langone PrMEIR Scholars Summer Intensive Program

Summer scholars in NYU Langone’s Program for Medical Education Innovations and Research (PrMEIR) take part in an eight-week research-focused course. The program is open to students in college through graduate school. Participants take part in a series of weekly workshops over the course of a summer that provides a window into career paths in the healthcare industry. 

Participants are expected to commit a minimum of 20 hours per week to the program, which includes attending mandatory Monday meetings, a weekly team meeting, and at least one professional development workshop.

In addition to the Emergency Department, which includes adult and pediatric emergency departments, volunteers typically rotate through the Trauma Center, Social Work, Nursing, Operating Room, Cardiac Catheterization Lab, EMT Ambulance Ride Alongs, Safety Net Clinic, Psychiatry, and Triage. Note, rotations vary year-to-year and by location.

Founded in 1981 by one of the fathers of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Lewis Goldfrank, our program has seen over 90% of its alumni achieve careers in medicine. Many past participants have gained acceptance into some of the most prestigious medical institutions in the nation (including our own), citing their experiences in Project Healthcare as pivotal to their success. For our volunteers, it is often the individual patient interactions that are most impactful. In the fast-paced, often chaotic emergency department, patients greatly benefit from their conversations with our volunteers as well.

The application for Project Healthcare Summer Volunteer Program 2026 is now open and will officially close on February 1, 2026. The application requires the submission of a personal statement, a current CV or resume, and two letters of recommendation, and a payment of $10-$15. Please note that no previous experiences are required.

We will be holding two Project Healthcare information sessions for the 2026 application cycle: the first will be Friday, November 14^th, 2025, at 1:00pm EST, and the second will be Friday, January 9^th, 2026, at 1:00pm EST.

Weill Cornell Medicine Summer Research Fellowship

 The Weill Cornell Medicine Summer Research Fellowship (SRF) 2026 application is now available. 

The Weill Cornell Medicine Summer Research Fellowship (WCMSRF) is designed to provide 25-27 premedical students with experiential research training, meaningful insights into the field of medicine, and enhanced knowledge of the conditions and policies impacting the health of traditionally underserved populations. By engaging in laboratory or clinical research, under the supervision of a faculty member, the WCMSRF participants learn how to investigate a specific research question. Participants are thereby provided with a research training experience allowing them to acquire investigative techniques that can be later applied as they pursue their medical education. The program's didactic curriculum has several themes. There are content delivery around common public health issues including healthcare for the under and uninsured; healthcare disparities; research basics; a financial aid presentation and practical advice from medical students on the medical school application process and preparing for the MCAT. In addition to these, participants engage with a wide variety of physicians in career panel discussions including primary care, pediatrics, neurology, ophthalmology, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, radiology, emergency medicine, and internal medicine. The highlight of the curriculum is a panel discussion populated by diversity and admissions deans from NY medical schools addressing the question “What are medical schools looking for?” 

With the resumption of in-person program in 2022, the program also provides each participant with an opportunity to shadow a physician. As research training is the primary mission of the program, shadowing opportunities are limited.

Summer Research Opportunity: St. Jude Pediatric Oncology Education (POE)

Pediatric Oncology Education (POE) Program. The program offers a unique opportunity for pre-doctoral students preparing for careers in the biomedical sciences, medicine, and pharmacy to gain biomedical and oncology research experience. Students participate in basic or clinical oncology research, a core lecture series designed specifically for them, as well as research and clinical conferences. All participants make a PowerPoint presentation on their research project on our core lecture series. They also submit a project report written in the style of a journal in which their faculty mentor publishes.

A primary goal of the POE program is to encourage highly qualified students to pursue a career in cancer research, either as a clinical scientist or laboratory-based research scientist. Our St. Jude Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences offers training in leading-edge scientific fields paired with unique mentoring in the St. Jude clinical experience. Highly motivated POE students may also consider applying to the St. Jude Graduate School upon completion of their undergraduate degree to further pursue their research and career interests.

POE medical students spend a minimum of 10 weeks in the program. The minimum tenure requirement for all others is 11 weeks. All POE applicants must have an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.40 (on a 4.0 scale) in math and science (biology, chemistry, and physics) and at least a 3.40 overall. Program participants will receive a $600/week subsistence allowance. Fully furnished group housing will be provided at no cost for non-local participants.

All POE program applicants must already have research experience and be full time students at a US school at the time they apply. Applicants must be United States citizens, non-citizen nationals, or possess a visa permitting permanent residence in the United States (required by the funding agency). Participants must be at least 18 and have completed at least their sophomore year of college when they begin the program.

Post-Bac Clinical Research Fellowship: CHOP

The Orthopedic Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) funds a select number of Medical Career Design (MCD) Fellowships to allow recent college graduates the opportunity to explore many aspects of a medical career — research, clinical practice, education, advocacy and leadership. The fellowship is a funded research program at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery. A minimum 2-year commitment is required. Successful MCD Fellow applicant will be completing a BA/BS degree. We will accepting applications on a rolling basis until March 1. However, earlier applications are welcome and fellowship spots will be offered to the candidates on rolling basis. Learn more and apply here.

Columbia University Emergency Medical Service (CUEMS) is hosting information sessions for sponsorship and membership for Spring 2025! CUEMS is Columbia's student-operated, New York State-certified, basic-life support (BLS) volunteer ambulance corps. CUEMS provides free prehospital emergency medical care to Columbia University's Morningside Heights Campus and the surrounding area, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. CUEMS has the same capabilities as any 911 BLS ambulance. Sponsorship and membership opportunities are open to Columbia University students. 

Sponsorship refers to the process for those who do not yet have their EMT-B certification but want to obtain one. Those selected for CUEMS sponsorship are able to obtain their EMT-B certification at no cost through a course offered by CodeOne, Inc. Students who participate in sponsorship are expected to take the NYS EMT-B exam upon completion of the course. 

Membership refers to the process of joining CUEMS. Membership is only open to those who already have an EMT-B certification in the state of NY and a valid U.S. driver’s license.
