Event: NJMS Virtual Admissions Information Sessions

Our first two sessions will focus on our Early Decision process. As the only “real” Early Decision process in the country, NJMS will begin interviewing applicants the last week in June and Acceptance decisions will begin on July 7, 2022. Our Virtual Admissions Information Sessions will outline topics such as:

• The Application Process
• Applying Early Decision
• The AMCAS Application

• Coursework/GPA: How this information is reviewed by the admissions committee
• The MCAT: How it is used by the admissions committee
• Personal Statement/Listing of Activities: Key points and elements to include
• Letters of Recommendation: Proper protocol
• Research/Extracurricular/Leadership Activities: How to convey experience, leadership ability and interest in medicine
• The Interview: Tips on how to prepare; The role of an interview in the admission process
• Growth/Gap Year(s): How to use this time

Event: Writing for Health Professions 1: Drafting

Prospective summer 2021 applicants to health professions programs and others are invited to the first in a series of spring writing workshops focused on the application process. We'll discuss writing for the Barnard Committee application as well as personal statements and other kinds of essays. The workshop is intended to be an interactive event (come prepared to do some writing!) and to help you set a foundation for work that will be developed throughout the spring semester.

This event will take place February 9 at 6pm eastern. Register via Handshake. 

Reminder: Committee Application, Part I Due Nov. 15

Part I of Barnard’s Committee Application is due on November 15, 2018 (for first-time applicants). If you plan to apply to medical or dental school in summer 2019, please make sure to:

• Set your intended matriculation year to 2020 in AdviseStream
• Review the Application Process and Application Timeline sections of the prehealth website
• View the Application Year Overview: Part I webinar in the Cycle 2019 Resources folder of your AdviseStream Advising Resource Library
• Submit Part I by the November 15th deadline (11:59 PM Eastern)

For those planning to apply to health professions schools in summer 2019, we ask that you update your intended matriculation year to 2020 in AdviseStream, if you have not already done so.

CYCLE 2016 WORKING GROUP SESSIONS

Bring your Lunch (or snack) and join your peers and Dean Cohen at our upcoming Cycle 2016 Working Group Sessions. These informal sessions are an opportunity to ask questions and get answers about the application process. These sessions are informal and unstructured so bring your laptop to work on your primary applications or a draft of your personal statement to get feedback.

No rules, no guidelines, no RSVP necessary. 

It's just a time and place to get some guidance and support from your pre-health community. 

Sessions will take place:
Mondays from 12:00-1:00pm
Tuesdays 3:30-4:30pm
Thursdays 12:00-1:00pm

Sessions begin Thursday, May 19th and extend through Thursday, June 30th.

Pre-Health Overview Sessions

Are you considering a career in the health profession? Do you have questions about being a pre-health student and want to learn more? Interested in learning about the resources and advising support our office provides? Whether you are a first year or a senior, it's never too late to start exploring the health professions.

Come to a Pre-Health Overview Session to learn about what it means to be pre-health at Barnard College. These small group sessions will serve to provide you with an overview of:

• Academic Preparation 
• Gaining Clinical, Research and Community Service Experience 
• Letters of Recommendation and Evaluation
• Resources and more!

We ask that you attend an overview session prior to scheduling an individual advising appointment with Dean Cohen, Associate Dean for Pre-Health Professions Advising.

Calling ALL Cycle 2016 Applicants!

Today, we are releasing the Declaration of Intent and Pre-Health Portfolio for Cycle 2016! 

The Declaration of Intent formally acknowledges your intent to participate in Cycle 2016 and receive a Committee Letter of Evaluation for graduate schools of the health profession. The form will include instructions for first time applicants and re-applicants, as well as access to the Pre-Health Portfolio. 

ALL Cycle 2016 applicants are required to complete the Declaration of Intent form by January 25th, 2016.

2016 Medical School Winter Workshop hosted by the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs at CUMC

The Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs at Columbia University Medical Center will be hosting a 2016 Medical School Winter Workshop! It will be a day filled with panels and presentations on demystifying the admissions process for students underrepresented in the Health Professions. 

The event will take place on Thursday, January 14th, 2016 at Columbia University Medical Center. Please RSVP by December 27th.

Are you "Competent"?

AAMC has developed four categories of Core Competences (Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, Thinking and Reasoning, and Science) for entering medical students. Check them out!

A successful applicant to medical school can demonstrate they are excellent in many or all of these core competences. How will you demonstrate in your application to medical schools that you are "Competent"? Think about the activities you have engaged in and the experiences you have gained during your time at Barnard. How can you "show" you are "competent" through these experiences?

Feel like there is room for improvement in a particular area? Good for you! We all have areas to improve upon! This is the perfect time to set a goal(s) for yourself to improve in this area through engagement in an activity (whether its a new one or current) so that you can demonstrate you are a strong applicant and will be a successful medical student and future doctor!
