Confirmed Panelists: Elaine Gottesman '14 - Geriatric Social Worker, NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center Elia Johnson '10 - Director of Social Work, Appellate Advocates Vikki Campos '11 - College Access Manager, Henry Street Settlement Panelists' Bios: Elaine Gottesman BC '14 is a geriatric social worker, currently working at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center on the Vulnerable Elder Protection Team serving vulnerable older adult patients. She graduated with an MSW from New York University Silver School of Social Work in 2018. At Barnard, Elaine majored in history and was active at the Columbia University Hillel, Barnard College's student government, CU's radio station, and BC's bartending agency. She loved being a student. She is married to a local New Yorker and gets to play every night with her happy 1-year-old baby. Elia Johnson holds a B.A. in Psychology from Barnard College and a Master of Science in Social Work with a concentration in public policy and a minor in law from Columbia University. She is currently the Director of Social Work at Appellate Advocates integrating social work into post-conviction representation in the direct appeal process and special practice areas. Previously, she built and managed the Client Services Program at the Office of the Appellate Defender (OAD). Creating a social work and reentry program to assist clients returning home from incarceration. Prior to joining OAD, Elia worked at Brooklyn Defender Services in the Adolescent Practice working with young people charged with felonies in Brooklyn. Additional prior experience includes interning in family court and in the Human Trafficking Court in Queens. Elia also worked as a Project Associate at the Correctional Association of New York and as a research assistant at the New York State Psychiatric Center and Center for Court Innovation. Vikki Campos thought they would be an immigration lawyer at 17 years old when they applied to Barnard and planned on majoring on Political Science but Barnard opened their eyes to different majors. Vikki ended up choosing Economics based on their love of mathematics. Based on Vikki's desire to help people, they took classes like Economics of Education, Inequality and Poverty, Economics of Gender, Race Law and Economics. During the summer before their senior year, they volunteered as a College Advisor for Let's Get Ready and fell in love with the field. They volunteered in college admissions counseling before changing their career to it in 2015. They have done college admissions counseling for first generation low income high school seniors in both New York City and Los Angeles. After many years in the profession, Vikki realized their students needed more socioemotional support and decided to get their Masters of Social Work at the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College. Vikki is currently doing college access and success work to help FGLI students transition more smoothly to college and hopes to work with college students in the future.

Virtual Fair: Columbia University Medical School Fair

The 2022 Columbia Medical School Fair will be entirely virtual due the ongoing developments of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we very much look forward to bringing information about some of the top medical schools in the US to students wherever they may be. 

A total of seven events will take place between 11am and 1pm ET on the following dates. These weekend sessions will allow students to learn about a total of 24 top institutions and to hear from specialists on topics of importance in the school selection process.

Introduction to Undergraduate Research Workshop & Panel (Biology Dept)

The Department of Biological Sciences will once again host two events focused on introducing students to undergraduate research. 

The first event, TOMORROW, November 30th at 12 pm, will be a virtual workshop led by Professor Jon Snow that will guide you through how to find and contact a principal investigator (PI) that you are interested in conducting research with. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone who has no idea where to start or has questions on what to do when cold-emailing a potential mentor. Zoom details can be found in the image below. 

The second event, on Wednesday, December 1st at 3 pm, will be a hybrid panel led by 6 current Barnard student panelists and a student moderator -- all of whom are currently conducting research as undergraduates. The panel will focus on Balancing Research While At Barnard. Info on our panelists and moderator can be found on the attached PDF. If you'd like to join by Zoom, no need to RSVP -- simply click on the Meeting ID to launch the Zoom url. If you'd like to be one of 30 guests invited to attend in person, RSVP HERE by no later than TOMORROW 11/30 at 6 pm to receive the room information. She has extensive training in the implementation of evidenced based treatments for anxiety, depression, emotion dysregulation, self-injury, suicidality, behavioral difficulties, and trauma. Dr. Wigod has training in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and completed an intensive training program in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). In her role as the Research Coordinator, she coordinates a wide range of research activities focusing on dissemination, implementation science, and prevention research. Dr. Wigod earned her bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Economics from Barnard College at Columbia University. She received her Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Clinical Psychology from LIU-Post. For her doctoral dissertation, she compared parent acceptability and preference of two models of treatment targeting early child behavioral problems. Katharine Loeb '91 Katharine L. Loeb, PhD is a Barnard alumna (class of 1991) and licensed clinical psychologist who has devoted her three-decade career to the research and treatment of eating, feeding, and weight disorders. She has also played an integral role in training future scientists and clinicians in this field. In 2020, Dr. Loeb retired as Professor of Psychology in the PhD Program in Clinical Psychology at Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) and joined the team at the Chicago Center for Evidence Based Treatment as the Director of Research and Training. Dr. Loeb received her PhD in Clinical Psychology from Rutgers University and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons. She was the founding Director of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine’s Eating and Weight Disorders Program; at FDU, she was Director of both the Eating, Feeding, and Weight Disorders Lab and Clinical Practicum. She has also been a faculty member, trainer, and certified therapist of the Training Institute for Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders since its inception. Dr. Loeb has been inducted as a Fellow in the Academy for Eating Disorders and in the Association for Psychological Science, and she is a recipient of the FDU Distinguished Faculty Award for Research and Scholarship. Dr. Loeb’s research involves improving case identification of and parenting capacities in managing child and adolescent eating disorders, and systems-level strategies, including applied behavioral economics, for pediatric overweight and obesity.  Columbia's annual panel discussion on the veterinary profession will take place on 10/21 at 7 pm. Students are invited to join panelists working in different areas of veterinary medicine for a discussion of how they chose and followed their various career paths. Also, part of the evening is a presentation by Jennifer Mailey at Cornell’s veterinary school on veterinary school admissions. Columbia Synapse Panel Event: The Resilient Brain, Current Research Landscape

 Columbia Synapse's annual research panel ("The Resilient Brain: Current Research Landscape") will be hosted on November 7th at 3 PM EST! All individuals interested in learning about the cutting-edge developments in TBI research are highly encouraged to attend! Amanda L. Sacks-Zimmerman, Ph.D., ABPP-CN, is a board-certified clinical neuropsychologist who has had extensive experience in assessing and treating neurological disorders with cognitive remediation as well as researching the cognitive impact of brain injury. She treats a variety of patients who suffer from cognitive and emotional difficulties that may be the result of epilepsy; radiation or chemotherapy; cardiopulmonary bypass procedures; surgery; cerebrovascular disease; stroke; silent infarcts; brain tumor resection; movement disorders such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and Huntington’s disease; metabolic disorders; infectious processes such as encephalitis or Lyme disease; chemical toxin exposure; traumatic brain injury; and dementia diagnoses including mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer’s disease, multi-infarct dementia, and frontal temporal dementia.

Dr. Koliatsos, Professor of Pathology and Neurology and Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, is the head of the Laboratory. Dr. Koliatsos trained in systems neuroscience with Mahlon DeLong and cellular and molecular neuropathology with Don Price. His main interest is mechanisms of neural injury and repair relevant to human disease. He has previously characterized a number of neurotrophic factors for key populations of neurons in the brain and spinal cord and initiated experimental therapies of spinal cord diseases with stem cells and their progenies. In recent years, Dr. Koliatsos has turned to the problem of traumatic brain injury, both as morbidity in and of itself and as model for neurodegenerative disorders. He serves on the faculty of the Ph.D. graduate program of Pathobiology of Disease and leads the TBI Research Center in the Department of Pathology. A clinical neuropsychiatrist, he also sees patients with TBI and degenerative dementias. Dr. Koliatsos has received a Leadership and Excellence in Alzheimer’s disease Award and the Javits Neuroscience Investigator Award from NIH and a 2018 Discovery Award from Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Peter Bergold received his B.S.in Biology from Trinity College in 1977 and his PhD in Molecular Biology from Cornell Medical College in 1986.  He did a post-doctoral fellowship in Neuroscience with Dr. James Schwartz at the Howard Hughes Institute at Columbia University.  He joined the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology of Downstate in 1990 as an Assistant Professor and became a Professor of Physiology, Pharmacology and Neurology in 2009.  His research interest in the last ten years has focused on traumatic brain injury.  A major research focus of his laboratory has been the development of drug combinations to treat brain injury.

Moderator: Wanda Cole-Frieman, SVP Talent Acquisition, CommonSpirit Health For the past two years, Wanda Cole-Frieman, VP, Talent Acquisition, has been a member of the Human Resources leadership team focused on building the Talent Acquisition Center of Excellence. KaTrina Rawlins, JD, Health Educator, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center KaTrina E. Rawlins is a Health Advocate and seeks to empower people with information to make positive lifestyle changes. She is passionate about improving health outcomes in under-served communities. She joined Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in 2003. She currently is employed as a Health Educator at the MSK Ralph Lauren Center located in East Harlem. In her current role, she collaborates with several community-based organizations, social service organizations, and faith-based organizations throughout New York City to address the importance of early screening for cancer. She coordinates educational programs to link community members with access to health screenings and other relevant resources. Ms. Rawlins earned her BA in Political Science from Barnard College, Columbia University. She completed her JD with a concentration in 1)Affordable Housing and 2) Finance Transactions and Community Economic Development and LLM in Criminal Law at the University at Buffalo School of Law. In addition, she received an Executive Education Certificate in Nonprofit Leadership from Fordham University and a Civic Engagement and Leadership Development certificate from the CUNY School of Professional Studies.  She is a member of the New York and New Jersey State Bar. She is involved with numerous community and professional organizations including Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

  Gillian Dean, MD, MPH, Senior Director of Medical Services, Planned Parenthood Federation of America Gillian Dean, MD, MPH (she/her) is the Senior Director of Medical Services at Planned Parenthood Federation of America, responsible for supporting Planned Parenthood affiliates nationwide in the delivery of high quality evidence-based health care. She provides clinical care and training at Planned Parenthood of Greater New York. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai where she founded and directed the Fellowship in Family Planning. She is the author of numerous peer-reviewed publications and online resources and frequently quoted in print and online media. Dr. Dean is a board certified obstetrician-gynecologist and a fellow of the Society of Family Planning and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Dr. Dean received her undergraduate degree in Women's Studies from Barnard College and her medical degree from Harvard Medical School. She completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of California, San Francisco where she subsequently completed a Fellowship in Family Planning. She received an MPH in Health Policy and Management from Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health. Megan Cloidt, Dental Public Health Resident (Dentist), Jacobi Medical Center Dr. Megan Cloidt, DDS, MPH is a public health dentist currently working at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx. She graduated from Barnard in 2013 with a BA in Neuroscience & Behavior. Following graduation, she worked at the New York State Psychiatric Institute as a laboratory technician in a neuroscience lab. She went on to attend Columbia University College of Dental Medicine and Mailman School of Public Health in a 5 year dual-degree DDS-MPH program and graduated in 2019. Her practicum project focused on the connections between edentulism (tooth loss), nutrition, and homelessness in Harlem. She completed a residency in Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) at Columbia/New York Presbyterian Hospital in June 2020. In April of her residency year, she was deployed to NYP Hospital to help with the COVID crisis, which highlighted the importance of public health efforts. This experience influenced her to delve further into public health by engaging in a Dental Public Health residency at Jacobi Medical Center, which is where she is today. Dr. Cloidt spends her days conducting dental public health research, program planning for the dental residents, and clinical duties serving Jacobi's HIV+ population. Annie Frisse, OBGYN Fellow in Complex Family Planning, Mount Sinai After matriculating from Barnard College, Annie Frisse received her medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine. She completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine where she served as Administrative Chief Resident. In residency she received several teaching awards and the Chair's Research Prize for her research on risk factors and outcomes of malpositioned intrauterine devices. She is currently a fellow in Complex Family Planning at Mount Sinai Hospital and is pursuing a Masters in Public Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Her research interests include contraception access, medical education in contraception and abortion, and teen sexual health.
