Correctional Health Services Population Health Internship

 Role information:

Correctional Health Services provides comprehensive healthcare for all individuals housed in the New York City jail system on Rikers Island. Summer interns will support important population health projects that aim to improve overall health outcomes. Project areas may include examining HIV-related outcomes, tracking viral hepatitis program data, and assisting with tracking age-appropriate preventative care programming. Interns will also have opportunities to shadow medical and social service providers and other interdisciplinary correctional health staff.

Requirements:

• June – August 2025
• Time commitment: At least three days per week on-site (on Rikers Island)
• Location: Rikers Island (students must be able to travel to Rikers Island – public transportation is available)
• Fingerprinting and a background check are required as part of the Rikers Island clearance process
• This opportunity is best suited for rising Juniors or Seniors who are pre-med, pre-health, or have an interest in public health
• There are no academic prerequisites; however, students should be willing to learn quickly and to be able to work independently
• The internship is unpaid, but CHS is happy to support any applications for external funding

Summer Opportunity: Columbia-WHO Center for Global Mental Health Internship

Since 2016, the Columbia-WHO Center for Global Mental Health has hosted a competitive summer internship for rising senior undergraduates interested in the growing field of global mental health.

Students participating in the Summer Internship Program will participate in a variety of didactic, career, and professional development seminars and will receive mentorship from 1-3 faculty members engaged in varied global mental health research and training initiatives. Through experiential learning, students will engage in research through placement-based global mental health projects that will be assigned according to their interests and project availability prior to the start of the internship. Additionally, students will gain exposure to networking within the healthcare research environment and develop the skills to apply an equity-informed lens into global mental health research and implementation.

The summer internship typically starts in June and runs for 8 weeks, with students attending daily seminar sessions and working on their assigned projects from Monday through Thursday. More information available here; eligible students may apply for funding via BBIP.

Campus Opportunity: Barnard Alliance for Healthcare and Humanitarian Aid

 Barnard Alliance for Healthcare and Humanitarian Aid aims to unite the BC/CU community through service, offering students opportunities to address healthcare issues through fundraising. We organize semester-long fundraisers to support charities that provide healthcare aid during crises, both domestically and internationally.

Timeline of BAHHA’s accomplishments over the course of the past few years:

• 2020: founded to raise awareness on healthcare inequalities during the pandemic thru educational posts on social media and fundraising efforts for the Association to Benefit Children, which provided medical relief during the pandemic

• 2021: fundraised for the UNHCR to support vaccine roll-out, medical supply distribution, and increasing WASH

• 2022: fundraised for the International Rescue Committee to provide relief to refugees at the Polish border. Fundraised for Feed the Children.

• 2023: fundraised for Turkish Philanthropy Funds (providing relief to those affected by the Turkey-Syria earthquake).

Volunteer Opportunity: Doctors Without Borders Event

Doctors Without Borders is hosting a bone marrow and blood stem cell donor registration event in collaboration with the nonprofit organization NMDP on March 26, 27, and 28 from 12-3 PM (location TBD). They manage a diverse marrow registry, and work to offer cures for blood cancer, sickle cell, and other diseases through blood stem cell transplants.

GlobeMed GWED-G Global Health Equity Internship

GlobeMed at Columbia would like to share a summer internship opportunity open to all CU and Barnard undergrads called the GWED-G Global Health Equity Internship Program. 

The GWED-G Global Health Equity Internship Program gives students the opportunity to be a part of grassroots public health work in rural Uganda under GWED-G (Gulu Women‘s Economic Development and Globalization). GWED-G is a human rights grassroots organization focusing on gender equality, maternal healthcare, community health education, and economic empowerment. Students will work directly under the founder of GWED-G and learn about public health community work. The focus of this internship is on helping distribute medical supplies to HIV+ positive mothers.

Job Opportunity: Research Data Associate, NYU Grossman School of Medicine

 Job Title: Research Data Associate

Background:
The NYU Grossman School of Medicine Department of Population Health works on multiple projects related to tobacco cessation and harm reduction strategies. This position will be based in the Division of Comparative Effectiveness and Decision Science within the Section of Tobacco, Alcohol, and Drug Use.

Job Summary:
The Research Data Associate will work with Dr. Scott Sherman (Principal Investigator [PI]) in the Department of Population Health to help carry out multiple health services research studies, including a federally funded study at Bellevue Hospital, titled, Financial Incentive Strategies for Smoking Cessation in High-Risk Hospitalized Patients II (FIESTA II). The Research Data Associate will assist the Research Coordinator in ensuring the accurate execution of the study protocol in accordance with Good Clinical Practices, HIPAA, IRB, and sponsor regulations. The Research Data Associate will be primarily focused on recruiting and following up participants in this and other ongoing research studies. The Research Data Associate will communicate closely with the study’s Principal Investigator, Co-Investigators, and study staff to provide updates about study progress and related issues. The Research Data Associate will be assigned to work on different assignments and tasks between projects based on real-time needs of project and interests of the individual.

Responsibilities:
1. Conduct participant screening and recruitment remotely and in-person;
2. Assist with the informed consent process and ensure that the subject fully understands what is required of them throughout the study;
3. Administer research surveys and capture data in the study’s electronic data system;
4. Perform in-person tests for participants
5. Support the day-to-day operations of the projects;
6. Mail study recruitment materials and other study-related materials to participants;
7. Collect patient information from electronic health record (EHR) and other data sources for the research project;
8. Manage and utilize participant tracking to facilitate longitudinal follow-up of participants;
9. Organize and maintain research records;
10. Maintain a thorough knowledge of the research study and procedures;
11. Maintain high research ethics and remain up to date on institutional review board trainings;
12. Assist the PI, Project Manager, and Research Coordinator in carrying out all aims of the project(s);
13. Participate in publications and research presentations, if interested.

Qualifications:
Education and Training

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in relevant field (e.g., Public Health, Health Communications, Health Science, Biology)
• At least one year of relevant work experience, preferably in social science, population health research, or public health
• Proficiency in using various Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, Access, Power Point and Outlook. Familiar with Internet applications.

Experience and Skills

• Ability to work with a team environment as well as independently
• Demonstrated ability to organize tasks and meet deadlines
• Strong writing and presentation skills
• Strong communication skills and commitment to continuous learning
• Experience with research studies involving human subjects.

Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunities at Columbia's Mailman School of Public Health

 The Biostatistics Epidemiology Summer Training (BEST) Diversity Program was established to expand and diversify the behavioral and biomedical sciences’ workforce by introducing undergraduates from underrepresented populations to biostatistics and cardiovascular and pulmonary disease research. Students representing racial and ethnic minority groups, disadvantaged backgrounds, and students with disabilities join the Department of Biostatistics at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health’s for eight weeks of research, training, academic and career planning, and social activities around New York City. Rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible for this program. 

The summer 2022 program is planned to be in-person.  However, we will closely monitor covid-19 cases leading up to the start of the program and assess whether the program will be in-person or remote.

*NEW PROGRAM* The Summer Institute for Training in Biostatistics and Data Science at Columbia (SIBDS@Columbia) is an innovative seven-week summer research training program at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health.  Program participants acquire and hone quantitative skills anchored on data immersion related to research challenges in studies of heart and lung diseases as well as infectious diseases. The seven weeks include a one-week asynchronous component during which participants will receive an introduction to biostatistics and data science as well as training on RStudio and other software. Rising juniors and seniors are eligible for this program. 

The summer 2022 program is planned to be in-person.  However, we will closely monitor covid-19 cases leading up to the start of the program and assess whether the program will be in-person or remote.

The Clinical Research Coordinator is required to have an in-depth knowledge of protocol requirements and good clinical practices as set forth by federal regulations. As the primary resource for the protocol, the Clinical Research Coordinator acts as a liaison between the patient, investigator, Institutional Review Board and sponsor. The Clinical Research Coordinator screens, enrolls and follows study patients, ensuring protocol compliance and close patient monitoring, and works independently in designing, coordinating, and implementing all assigned research projects. The Clinical Research Coordinator is responsible for all data and source documentation, adverse event reporting and maintenance of complete regulatory files.

The primary responsibility of the Clinical Research Coordinator II is to manage all aspects of conducting clinical trials and other epidemiological studies. The Clinical Research Coordinator II is required to have an in-depth knowledge of protocol requirements and good clinical practices as set forth by federal regulations. As one of the primary resources for the protocol, the Clinical Research Coordinator II acts as a liaison between the patient, investigator, collaborators, Institutional Review Board and sponsor. The Clinical Research Coordinator II is able to recruit, screen, enroll and follow study patients, and perform the associated data collection, entry, and quality control activities, under supervision, ensuring protocol compliance and close patient monitoring, continuing the required learning process record in this second level position for advancement towards a Clinical Research Coordinator III position. The Clinical Research Coordinator II is responsible for all data and source documentation, adverse event reporting and maintenance of complete regulatory files, under direct supervision. The Clinical Research Coordinator II may also perform simple procedures (ecgs, vital signs, etc.), as well as laboratory processing, as called for by the study protocol(s).

Columbia University Global Mental Health Programs 2022 Summer Internship Program

Since 2016, the Columbia University Global Mental Health Programs have hosted a competitive summer internship for rising senior undergraduates interested in the growing field of global mental health. Students participating in the summer internship program will be exposed to a wide range of didactic seminars and experiential learning opportunities and will be mentored by 1-3 departmental faculty focused on various global mental health initiatives.
