Correctional Health Services Population Health Internship

 Role information:

Correctional Health Services provides comprehensive healthcare for all individuals housed in the New York City jail system on Rikers Island. Summer interns will support important population health projects that aim to improve overall health outcomes. Project areas may include examining HIV-related outcomes, tracking viral hepatitis program data, and assisting with tracking age-appropriate preventative care programming. Interns will also have opportunities to shadow medical and social service providers and other interdisciplinary correctional health staff.

Requirements:

• June – August 2025
• Time commitment: At least three days per week on-site (on Rikers Island)
• Location: Rikers Island (students must be able to travel to Rikers Island – public transportation is available)
• Fingerprinting and a background check are required as part of the Rikers Island clearance process
• This opportunity is best suited for rising Juniors or Seniors who are pre-med, pre-health, or have an interest in public health
• There are no academic prerequisites; however, students should be willing to learn quickly and to be able to work independently
• The internship is unpaid, but CHS is happy to support any applications for external funding

University of Michigan M-SURE Program Application Open

The 2025 M-SURE program will support 16 undergraduate trainees for a summer research experience with mentors from an outstanding pool of faculty investigators engaged in cutting-edge basic and clinical research related to diabetes, endocrinology, and metabolic diseases.

The funding amount for 2025 will be $7200, pre-tax, for twelve weeks of full-time work from May 27 through August 15. The start and/or end date of the fellowship may be shifted slightly to accommodate overlap with the academic year at home institutions, if necessary. Students who are currently enrolled at any degree granting university or college are eligible to apply. Preference is given to those students interested in a career in research. Although federal funding is limited to U.S. citizens or permanent residents, we will have a few slots available for international students.

Each student is matched, based on their interests, to a laboratory participating in M-SURE, led by a faculty mentor of the Molecular & Integrative Physiology Department and/or the Caswell Diabetes Institute at the University of Michigan. Faculty are all committed to undergraduate training and use broad approaches to improve our understanding of obesity, diabetes, endocrinology, and metabolic diseases.

 

To enhance our M-SURE trainees’ experience, there will be a weekly lecture series highlighting the physiology of diabetes, endocrinology & metabolism. Additional presentations will focus on how to develop a career in biomedical research, and responsible conduct of research. Trainees will give a final oral presentation of their work at the end of summer Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium. We are excited to provide training and mentorship opportunities in basic/foundational and translational research to help develop the next generation of highly accomplished biomedical scholars interested in biomedical research and discovery.

Summer Opportunity: Columbia-WHO Center for Global Mental Health Internship

Since 2016, the Columbia-WHO Center for Global Mental Health has hosted a competitive summer internship for rising senior undergraduates interested in the growing field of global mental health.

Students participating in the Summer Internship Program will participate in a variety of didactic, career, and professional development seminars and will receive mentorship from 1-3 faculty members engaged in varied global mental health research and training initiatives. Through experiential learning, students will engage in research through placement-based global mental health projects that will be assigned according to their interests and project availability prior to the start of the internship. Additionally, students will gain exposure to networking within the healthcare research environment and develop the skills to apply an equity-informed lens into global mental health research and implementation.

The summer internship typically starts in June and runs for 8 weeks, with students attending daily seminar sessions and working on their assigned projects from Monday through Thursday. More information available here; eligible students may apply for funding via BBIP.

 

Weill Cornell Medical College Travelers Summer Research Fellowship (T-SRF).

In the summer of 2025, the Weill Cornell Medical College will mount the 57th season of the Travelers Summer Research Fellowship (T-SRF). T-SRF is a seven-week experiential research program for junior or senior premedical students from diverse backgrounds who are committed a career in medicine and who have a demonstrated commitment to working with underserved populations. The program is designed to enhance a participant’s eligibility for medical school and is described comprehensively outlined in the attached brochure, including the application process. The program provides an opportunity for the student to execute a research project under the supervision/mentorship of a seasoned WCM faculty member while exposing participants to near peer mentorship, clinical faculty from a variety of specialties, as well as public health and clinical topics in medicine, particularly those that impact underserved and minority populations.

 About the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP)

The SURP is an intensive, 9-week internship designed to provide research experience and mentorship for rising-senior undergraduate students who are interested in biomedical research. Under the guidance of a faculty mentor, students will:

• Complete an independent research project;
• Attend weekly research seminars;
• Participate in professional development workshops designed to facilitate the preparation of competitive applications for graduate/medical school; and
• Present their findings at a competitive poster session.

The program will run from Monday, June 16 – Friday, August 15, 2025. An online application for the 2025 SURP is now available on the SURP website.

GlobeMed GWED-G Global Health Equity Internship

GlobeMed at Columbia would like to share a summer internship opportunity open to all CU and Barnard undergrads called the GWED-G Global Health Equity Internship Program. 

The GWED-G Global Health Equity Internship Program gives students the opportunity to be a part of grassroots public health work in rural Uganda under GWED-G (Gulu Women‘s Economic Development and Globalization). GWED-G is a human rights grassroots organization focusing on gender equality, maternal healthcare, community health education, and economic empowerment. The focus of this internship is on helping distribute medical supplies to HIV+ positive mothers.

Weill Cornell Medicine Feil Family BMRI Neuroscience Summer Diversity Scholars Program

The Feil Family Brain and Mind Research Institute (BMRI) at Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM) is pleased to announce the return of the BMRI Summer Diversity Scholar. The BMRI Summer Scholar offers promising young scientists residing in the New York City area a 10-week long paid internship at a world-renowned research facility with leaders in neurodegeneration research. Individuals will receive one-on-one training with a researcher in one of the BMRI/Neuroscience Graduate Program laboratories, develop a research idea and plan, learn scientific methods, and produce their own data. They will also be included in workshops and seminars sponsored by WCM’s Office of Diversity. At the end of the internship, BMRI diversity scholars will present their findings in a research seminar. This year the summer program is planned to be held in-person. Applicants will be notified via email should any changes need to be made due to health and safety concerns relating to COVID-19.

Requirements:

• Applicants should be currently pursuing a college-level degree. A science-related major (e.g., biology, chemistry, math, engineering, etc.) is not required; non-science majors should discuss their science-related interests in their personal statement.

• Commitment to a 10-week long, summer internship in one of the BMRI labs. (https://brainandmind.weill.cornell.edu/faculty-research-0).

• Identify as coming from an underrepresented background (Underrepresented racial/ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities, and/or individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, as defined by NIH guidelines: https://extramural-diversity.nih.gov/diversity-matters/get-the-facts).

• Strong motivation to pursue a doctoral degree and/or career in scientific research or a science-related field.

Summer Research Opportunity: University of Michigan Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship

The University of Michigan Samuel & Jean Frankel Cardiovascular Center (FCVC) is pleased to offer a 10-week Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) in the summer of 2022.

Program Description:  Each fellow will be matched, based on their interests, to a laboratory led by a FCVC faculty member. This collection of laboratories is involved in internationally recognized research in topics such as atherosclerosis, genetic cardiomyopathies, blood clotting disorders, cardiac arrhythmias, vascular biology, and heart failure.  Fellows will be paid via bi-weekly paychecks at a rate of $15/hour for ten weeks of full-time work, starting the Tuesday after Memorial Day and ending the second week of August. The program includes scientific seminars, social events, and a two-day research symposium where fellows present their research to their peers and FCVC faculty and staff. Program dates are subject to change pending the current state of the COVID-19 pandemic.
