Mentorship Opportunity: PrIMES

The PrIMES Mentorship Program, supported by Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, seeks to empower URiM (Underrepresented in Medicine) pre-med students by pairing them with current medical students or resident physicians as mentors.

PrIMES is dedicated to helping students overcome the unique barriers they face in applying to and matriculating into medical school. Through mentorship, the program aims to increase diversity in medical education and provide guidance and support to students from historically underrepresented backgrounds.

Recruitment has begun for the 2025 virtual cohort. The program is entirely online and requires a commitment of just one hour per week, along with a few online events where mentors and mentees can connect and socialize.

USC Pre-Med Academy Application Open

The application for the new USC Pre-Med Academy is now open.  Offered free of charge through Bovard Scholars, the USC Pre-Med Academy is designed for high-achieving college students, nationwide, who have financial need and lack the resources needed to succeed in the highly competitive medical school application process. Our flexible, fully online program, offered at no-cost, is customized to recognize students’ strengths, connect them with peers, and guide students toward success in the medical school admissions process.

Our program provides personalized, one-on-one mentorship and advising from our medical school admissions expert, access to current medical students, practicing physicians, and medical school faculty and staff, MCAT test prep, nationwide peer community connections, relevant workshops, guest speakers, and complete application support—from the personal statement, and letters of recommendation to school selection and interviewing.   

 

To learn more about our program and to apply, please visit our website and check out our program overview video, near the top of the homepage.  We invite freshman and sophomore students with a 3.5 GPA or higher who are first-generation college students and/or Pell-eligible with a lack of access to advising, test prep and resources to apply.  Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, and space is limited, so please apply ASAP for the best chance of admission.  We will continue accepting applications until our class is full, or no later than November 18, 2022, whichever occurs first.  Our program begins mid-January 2023 and support continues throughout the pre-med planning, application, and decision-making process.

Summer Health Professions Education Program

The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) is a free summer program for students to explore their interests in medicine, dentistry, nursing, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy, public health, and more. With the goal of increasing the acceptance rates of applicants that apply to health professions schools who come from underrepresented and marginalized communities, the Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) National Program Office and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation have decided to increase the participant stipend from $600 to $1000, beginning with the 2023 SHPEP cohort.

SHPEP is open to first-year and sophomore students who meet other eligibility criteria. The SHPEP National Program Office is proud to announce that it has just launched a newly designed website that genuinely speaks to all students interested in the health professions. For students who are not eligible for SHPEP, we recommend they check out the "For Students" section of the website, which includes pathway resources and other opportunities to gain research and clinical exposure.

Gerald E. Thomson Undergraduate Pre-Medical Program

GET-UPP is a free pre-medical mentorship program designed to supplement students’ academic trajectory as they pursue medical school admission.

 

Named in honor of Dr. Gerald Thomson, Professor of Medicine Emeritus at Columbia University, the Gerald E. Thomson Undergraduate Pre-Medical Program (GET-UPP) will serve undergraduate students from Columbia University, Barnard College, and the City University of New York schools. The program runs through the course of the academic year and once students are admitted, they may remain in the program until their undergraduate graduation.

Mission/Objective
 

The program provides career development support for participating scholars by providing opportunities to network with professionals in medical education and the healthcare workforce. Students are afforded clinical shadowing experiences along with a series of workshop sessions designed to bolster their academic and professional skillset throughout college and medical school. Interactions with medical students and faculty and academic counseling sessions round out the program experience.

The program aims to guide students in forming the foundation necessary to enhance their candidacy for successful matriculation to medical school. Program participants will complete the program with a better understanding of what it takes to successfully apply to medical school and position themselves optimally for a career in medicine.

Program activities for the 2022-2023 academic year will commence in late September. All 2022-2023 program activities have been hosted remotely and the program will continue in an all-virtual format until in-person activity is deemed feasible by university guidance.

The GET-UPP Program serves up to 50 underrepresented pre-medical students yearly. 

 

Eligible participants include, but are not limited to, those who identify as African American/Black, American Indian and Alaskan Native, Hispanic/Latino, and/or those who are from communities of socioeconomic and educational disadvantage. 

 

Program applicants should:

• Be a rising sophomore, junior or senior enrolled at Columbia University, Barnard College, or one of the City University of New York schools, including community college campuses
• Identify as a US citizen, a permanent resident, or an individual granted deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) status by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services 
• Maintain an over-all GPA of 2.75 or higher
• Be able to attend all program activities typically held on Friday evenings.

2022 AIAN Medical School Application Workshop

The Northwest Native American Center of Excellence is excited to announce the 2022 American Indian/Alaska Native Medical School Application Workshop in collaboration with Oregon Health and Sciences University, Washington State University, University of Washington, and U.C. Davis School of Medicine. The workshop will be held virtually on Friday, May 6^th, 2022.

This workshop will comprehensively review the medical school admissions process, including: 1) practical tips for writing your personal statement and a 1:1 live feedback session, 2) requesting letters of recommendation, 3) mock medical school interviews in MMI and traditional formats, and 4) helpful tips for navigating the application process.

2022 Wy'east Post-Bac Program (conditional acceptance to OHSU, UC Davis SOM, or WSU COM)

The Wy’east Pathway is a FREE 10-month post-baccalaureate Pathway for AIAN learners who are passionate about becoming doctors and are on the brink of going to medical school. The goal is to prepare learners for the rigors of medical school and to provide cultural support and mentorship. The Pathway takes place at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in Portland, OR. Deadline Approaching: MSK Bridge Postbac

 MSK Bridge is a two-year post-baccalaureate research program for recent college graduates from historically underrepresented and underserved groups who intend to apply to biomedical PhD or MD-PhD programs upon completion of Bridge.

MSK BRIDGE PROVIDES:

• Research experience - immersion in biomedical research in cutting-edge laboratories at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK), and an opportunity to give an oral presentation on your research project at the MSK Bridge symposium.

• Community - intensive mentoring from faculty, graduate students, and postdocs.

• Educational training - participation in the Gerstner Sloan Kettering Graduate School (GSK) cancer biology core course, professional development workshops and skills building classes, as well as research seminars and departmental talks.

• Professional guidance - individualized career guidance and assistance with the graduate school application process from the Office of Scientific Education and Training.

• Benefits – an annual stipend of $41,000, health benefits, and access to MSK rental housing.

Weill Cornell Medicine Feil Family BMRI Neuroscience Summer Diversity Scholars Program

The Feil Family Brain and Mind Research Institute (BMRI) at Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM) is pleased to announce the return of the BMRI Summer Diversity Scholar. The BMRI Summer Scholar offers promising young scientists residing in the New York City area a 10-week long paid internship at a world-renowned research facility with leaders in neurodegeneration research. Individuals will receive one-on-one training with a researcher in one of the BMRI/Neuroscience Graduate Program laboratories, develop a research idea and plan, learn scientific methods, and produce their own data. They will also be included in workshops and seminars sponsored by WCM’s Office of Diversity. At the end of the internship, BMRI diversity scholars will present their findings in a research seminar. This year the summer program is planned to be held in-person. Applicants will be notified via email should any changes need to be made due to health and safety concerns relating to COVID-19.

Requirements:

• Applicants should be currently pursuing a college-level degree. A science-related major (e.g., biology, chemistry, math, engineering, etc.) is not required; non-science majors should discuss their science-related interests in their personal statement.

• Commitment to a 10-week long, summer internship in one of the BMRI labs. (https://brainandmind.weill.cornell.edu/faculty-research-0).

• Identify as coming from an underrepresented background (Underrepresented racial/ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities, and/or individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, as defined by NIH guidelines: https://extramural-diversity.nih.gov/diversity-matters/get-the-facts).

• Strong motivation to pursue a doctoral degree and/or career in scientific research or a science-related field.

Application materials:

• Personal statement (1000 words maximum) describing the applicant’s interest in science. We encourage applicants to include:

    o Description of future academic and career goals and how this program may aid them.

    o Previous research experience(s) and what they gained from those experiences. If the applicant has not yet had research experience, we ask that the applicant describe skills they believe will help them in this experience.

    o Which BMRI research labs are of interest to them.

    o What they hope to obtain through this program.

    o How COVID-19 has impacted their academic/career goals.

• Current CV or resume.

• 2 letters of reference from a professor or mentor that can attest to the individual’s potential and previous accomplishments.

Compensation: Scholars are expected to work full-time and will be paid a $5000 stipend.

Program duration: June 6, 2022 through August 12, 2022

 The Biostatistics Epidemiology Summer Training (BEST) Diversity Program was established to expand and diversify the behavioral and biomedical sciences’ workforce by introducing undergraduates from underrepresented populations to biostatistics and cardiovascular and pulmonary disease research. Students representing racial and ethnic minority groups, disadvantaged backgrounds, and students with disabilities join the Department of Biostatistics at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health’s for eight weeks of research, training, academic and career planning, and social activities around New York City. Rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible for this program. 

The summer 2022 program is planned to be in-person.  However, we will closely monitor covid-19 cases leading up to the start of the program and assess whether the program will be in-person or remote.

*NEW PROGRAM* The Summer Institute for Training in Biostatistics and Data Science at Columbia (SIBDS@Columbia) is an innovative seven-week summer research training program at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health.  Program participants acquire and hone quantitative skills anchored on data immersion related to research challenges in studies of heart and lung diseases as well as infectious diseases. The seven weeks include a one-week asynchronous component during which participants will receive an introduction to biostatistics and data science as well as training on RStudio and other software. Rising juniors and seniors are eligible for this program. 

The summer 2022 program is planned to be in-person.  However, we will closely monitor covid-19 cases leading up to the start of the program and assess whether the program will be in-person or remote.

Vanderbilt University LGBTQ Health Summer Internship

The Vanderbilt Program for LGBTQ Health is a national leader in patient care, education, research, and advocacy for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer communities.  Through this internship program, we hope to further this mission and to foster the personal and professional development of future leaders in LGBTQ health and research.

We are hosting a limited number of students for 10-week, full-time internships from late May to early August, though exact dates are flexible.  Interns will receive a modest wage to help offset their living expenses in Nashville, Tennessee. 

For competitive consideration, applicants must:

• Be an undergraduate student (rising junior or senior) or a graduate student (especially medical or nursing school students)
• Have a committed interest in LGBTQ health and research
• Demonstrate this interest through previous work, research, volunteer, or other experiences

Zucker SOM College Pipeline Program Application Open

The application for the 2022 Zucker School of Medicine- College Pipeline Program (SOM-CPP) was created to increase the matriculation of underrepresented in medicine (URM) students to the Zucker School of Medicine. This three-year, summer-time program is designed to provide high achieving college students who are interested in a career in medicine an opportunity to direct matriculation to the Zucker School of Medicine.  The SOM-CPP Program is in its' third year of existence. The CMEP Program is open to sophomores, juniors, seniors, recent graduates, and post-baccalaureate students at City College, Columbia, Cornell, Fordham University, Hunter College, and St. John's-Queens that are interested in pursuing a career in medicine/healthcare. 

All candidates who meet the above criteria may apply. We especially encourage applications from groups currently underrepresented in medicine and research, including students who are: Native American, Black, and Latinx students.
