Summer Opportunity: Project AHEAD Internship

Project AHEAD Internship Project Asian Health Education and Development (AHEAD) is a 9-week summer  internship program designed to give training and experience to college students  who have an interest in pursuing a career in healthcare. Project AHEAD 2018  will take place Monday, June 18, 2018 through Friday, August 17, 2018, and will be located in lower Manhattan. Students will be exposed to various healthcare careers, and gain an understanding  of the history and dynamics of the New York Asian American community,  and of current health issues impacting the health status of  Asian Americans in the United States. Interns will have the opportunity  to create and implement a community health project and attend seminars and workshops. Interns will receive a $1,000 stipend for the summer program.  The Health Center will not be responsible for housing accommodation, food or travel expenses.  If accepted applicants are not New York City residents,  please contact your school for possible NYC housing opportunities available to interns. Program requirements include currently an undergraduate student  in second, third or final year of college at time of application,  interest in healthcare and the Asian American community,  and committed to working full-time, Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.,  including some early mornings and weekends.  We cannot accommodate international students  or students who are studying temporarily in the United States. Applications are only accepted online, and include an  online application, personal statement and letter of recommendation.  Complete applications must be submitted no later than February 15, 2018.  Late applications will not be accepted.  Academic transcripts and resumes are not required and will not be accepted.  Applicants may be contacted for an interview for more information.  These interviews will take place between February 20 and 24, 2018. Public Health Event: Public Health Internship Panel at Columbia this Sunday 12/3

Are you curious about the field of Public Health? Don’t know where to start looking for jobs or internships?

Come join Columbia Public Health Club this Sunday December 3rd at 7:30pm in Mathematics 203 for a student panel to hear about real experience in the world of Public Health. We will have representatives from the public, non-profit, and private sector, including: The New York Department of Health, Northwell Health, IMG Quintiles and more! Panelists will cover topics from resume building and networking to the value of the internship and how it helped them define their career path. 

Attendees will receive a copy of the CPCH Internship Masterlist which contains information on a wide range of internships and funding opportunities for undergraduates!

Event: SRI Open House Next Week

SRI (summer research institute) is a 10-week program for Barnard students who want to conduct scientific research during the summer. You can work with faculty at Barnard or elsewhere in the city. 

The SRI will provide a common experience for all students. It will also provide you the option of living in Barnard’s subsidized summer housing. Your research experience will be supplemented with academic and skill-building experiences, lectures, social events and a capstone poster event at the summer’s end.

Opportunity: GET-UP Program at CUMC

The Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs (ODMA) at Columbia University, College of Physicians & Surgeons is pleased to inform you about the new GET-UP Program (Gerald E. Thomson Undergraduate Pre-Health Program). 

The GET-UP Program is a free, year-long pre-medical mentorship program that is designed to supplement students’ academic trajectory as they pursue medical school admission.  GET-UP Program participants will engage with a network of professionals in medical education and healthcare through mentorship sessions and shadowing experiences. In addition, students will be afforded opportunities to participate in a workshop series constructed to bolster their academic and professional skillset throughout college and medical school. Interactions with medical students and faculty as well as academic counseling sessions will also be incorporated in students’ program experience.

The GET-UP Program will serve up to 50 pre-medical students from Columbia College, Barnard College, and undergraduate programs at the City Universities of New York. Eligible students are US citizens or permanent residents, who have an overall GPA of 2.75 or higher. Students must be able to attend program sessions on weekday evenings.

For the spring 2018 semester, the program will run from February until the end of May at Columbia University Medical Center. Participating students will receive free access to program resources.

Event: NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine Open House

Our LMSA medical student leaders in conjunction with the NYITCOM Office of Admissions, will be hosting an Open House -  Friday, December 1, 2017 for all aspiring future DOctors on our beautiful campus in Old Westbury, New York (25 miles outside of NYC!)

Our Open House event is FREE and open to all premedical students, especially focusing on minority students that wish to learn more about their options for medical education and training at one of the nation’s top osteopathic medical schools.   Attendees will have a chance to interact with our current medical students, meet faculty and the admissions staff, experience OMM firsthand and tour our campus, anatomy labs and facilities.   Lunch will be provided.

Pre-Dental Event: Greater New York Dental Meeting

ASDA District 2 is excited to announce that we are teaming up with the Greater New York Dental Meeting (GNYDM) to provide pre-dental students with FREE programming at the meeting. On Sunday November 26th 9am-5pm pre-dental students will have the opportunity to attend any or all of the following events:

• Mastering the Interview Process (9am-10:30am)
• Dental Specialists Panel (10:30am-12pm)
• Dental Admissions Presentations & Mix n’ Mingle (7 east coast schools in attendance)

The Greater New York Dental Meeting will be held at the Javits Center 655 W. 34th St, New York, NY 10001. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the profession, help prepare students for the application process, network and perhaps even find a mentor! Plus between 12pm and 3pm predental students are free to explore the exhibition hall where 1700 vendors will be giving product demos & giving away free merchandise.
