National Hispanic Medical Association College Health Scholars Program Conference Dates

The NHMA College Health Scholars Program is funded by the U.S. Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health to help increase diversity in five fields (medicine, dentistry, nursing, public health, and graduate science) by working with current pre-health/science undergraduate students. Students are invited to visit their webpage (http://bit.ly/NHMACHSP), which has academic advice, professional development, and financial aid information.

Volunteer Openings at Mount Sinai St. Luke's

Mount Sinai St. Luke’s currently has volunteer openings on its inpatient floors.  This is a great opportunity for someone interested in medicine and healthcare to gain exposure to the clinical environment. Volunteers have direct contact with patients, assist staff with non-clinical needs on the units, and they are introduced to the day-to-day operations of a hospital.

If you have students who are interested in applying to begin volunteering this fall, please complete the online application form before October 31, 2018.

A Friend for Rachel

Are you a pre-health student seeking a unique experience and direct contact with patients?

“A Friend for Rachel” affords students with professional interests in healthcare with a unique learning experience and volunteer opportunity.  Students provide ongoing companionship to people with early-stage dementia.

Currently, 5.4 million Americans (1 person every 68 seconds) are diagnosed with dementia.  As a “friend,” you can:

·         Help people with early-stage dementia continue to enjoy their interests, stay active, be involved in meaningful activity, develop new relationships, and avoid isolation.

·         Help provide respite time for their family caregiver.

·         Gain a thorough understanding of a very complex disease, which is considered a public health crisis.

·         Develop a meaningful relationship with a person with dementia.

“Friends” must commit to:

·         Spending 3-4 hours/week for with a person with early-stage dementia, for at least 1 semester

·         Participating in research being conducted on the impact of the project on all participants.

·         Participating in a series of 4 didactic and experiential learning workshops as well as ongoing supervision provided by experts in the field.  Workshop dates are 2-4pm, Sundays: Sept. 23, Oct. 7, Oct. 28, Dec. 2

Some of topics covered in training sessions include:

·         Understanding dementia and cognitive impairment

·         Understanding caregiver burden

·         Pursuing quality of life and meaningful activity tailored to the individual utilizing art, music, horticulture

·         Effective communication skills for interacting with patients and families

·         Understanding behaviors and why they have meaning

Penn's Pre-Health Programs offer customized curricula

At the University of Pennsylvania's Pre-Health Post-Baccalaureate Programs, we provide flexible and dynamic courses, research experiences and clinical opportunities for students preparing for their professional health careers.  Programs include: Core Studies: Foundational academics for students with a limited science background  Specialized Studies: Tailored coursework for students who possess a significant background in the sciences

Many of our students don't fit neatly into the typical sets of courses in either track, and we work with them to craft a full profile of classes needed for a successful medical, dental, veterinary or nursing school application.   We also offer a breadth of support services, including committee letter writing, application material management, peer interest groups and personal advising.
