Gap Year Position: Research Assistant, Basic Science

The laboratory of Meenakshi Rao, M.D., Ph.D. seeks a highly motivated individual excited about science to join our team as a full-time research assistant. The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is unique among other organs because it has its own intrinsic nervous system, called the enteric nervous system (ENS). The ENS is large, complex, and regulates a variety of digestive and metabolic functions. The Rao lab uses mouse genetic models, imaging, and a variety of both in vivo and ex vivo assays to investigate how information about nutrients, mechanical stimuli, and microbes is detected and used by neurons and glia of the ENS to regulate GI motility, metabolism, epithelial functions and immune responses.

This is an outstanding opportunity to gain research experience and author publications in an exciting area at the interface of neuroscience and digestive biology.

Job description: The research assistant will work closely with the principal investigator and postdoctoral fellows to perform experiments that involve tissue dissection, qPCR, microscopy, immunohistochemistry, rodent surgeries and behavioral assays. 25% of time will be dedicated to maintaining the mouse colony and administrative responsibilities, such as ordering supplies.

Minimum Degree Required: B.A. or B.S. with major in Neuroscience, Biology, Biochemistry or Biomedical Engineering. Other majors considered depending on relevant experience and coursework.

Minimum Qualifications: Excellent organizational skills, prior full-time work experience, and good written as well as verbal communication skills in English. 

Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience working with mice, molecular biology, tissue culture, or calcium imaging.

Rubens J. Pamies Scholarship Fund - SHPEP Alumni

The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) Alumni Advisory Board is excited to announce the application opening for the Rubens J. Pamies Scholarship Fund! Four scholarships, in the amount of $500, will be awarded to alumni who participated in the MMEP, SMEP, SMDEP, or SHPEP program.  The scholarship, conceived by program alumni, is designed to help scholars alleviate the costs associated with pursuing a career in the health professions.  The scholarship may be used to help pay for expenses such as test preparation courses (e.g. MCAT or DAT prep courses), application fees, test fees, and travel expenses for interviews. Ideal candidates will demonstrate a commitment to eliminating health disparities by providing patient-centered and culturally-sensitive heath care. The SHPEP alumni board members are dedicated to working with their fellow alumni to create a bright career pathway into the health professions.

Research Assistant Positions: Seaver Autism Center for Research & Treatment

Research Assistant positions are available for undergraduates with an interest in psychology, neuroscience, and/or computer science for the Summer of 2019 in the Foss-Feig Lab at the Seaver Autism Center for Research and Treatment at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Founded through the generous support of the Beatrice and Samuel A. Seaver Foundation, the Seaver Autism Center is home to a multidisciplinary team of experts who use genetics, molecular biology, model systems, neuroimaging, and experimental therapeutics to personalize the optimal treatment plan for each patient. Our Center also provides opportunities to participate in research studies that seek to better understand the causes of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and improve treatment options. The Center is led by internationally renowned researchers in the field of autism: Joseph D. Buxbaum, PhD, Director, and Alex Kolevzon, MD, Clinical Director. Research in the Foss-Feig Lab combines clinical assessments with brain-based methods, including EEG and MRI, to examine sensory and perceptual functioning in ASD. We also study the relation between ASD and other neurodevelopmental disorders, including schizophrenia and psychosis prodrome, as well as monogenic disorders with a prominent ASD phenotype.

 

We are looking for highly responsible, organized individuals who are interested in a career in psychology, neuroscience, medicine, or clinical research.

 

RAs are responsible for assisting with running patient visits, processing data, data entry, and administrative duties such as participant recruitment and organization of study materials. They also have opportunities to observe patient/doctor interactions (e.g., diagnostic assessments, intelligence testing) and attend research conferences/seminars.

 

A minimum of 3 months (typically a semester or a summer) of research experience is required and completion of Research Methods, Abnormal Psychology and Statistics and/or knowledge programming is preferred.

We require a time commitment of about 10 hours per week, depending on the applicant’s availability and our needs. A minimum commitment of two months is required, with preference for applicants able to commit to continued involvement in the lab after the summer. This is an unpaid internship, though opportunities for course credit or thesis projects may be possible based on an intern’s involvement and school requirements. We are happy to provide letters of recommendation based on an intern’s work at the Center.

Laboratory Manager Position: University of Delaware Communication Sciences & Disorders

The Communication Sciences and Disorders Program at the University of Delaware is seeking a full-time Limited Term Researcher (i.e., lab manager/coordinator), under the supervision of Drs. Giovanna Morini and Sayako Earle. The successful candidate will work jointly in the Speech Language Acquisition & Multilingualism (SLAM) and Memory & Perception of Speech (MAPS) labs. 

The candidate will help with various aspects of our research including: training and supervising undergraduate research assistants; managing participant recruitment; coordinating lab calendars/scheduling, interacting with children, families, and schools; entering, coding, and analyzing data; purchasing and upkeep of equipment and supplies; reading relevant literature; organizing outreach to the local community; helping with conference presentations and manuscripts; submitting and renewing IRB protocols.

We are especially interested in someone who has excellent social skills, is organized, detail-oriented, resourceful, and has the ability to multi-task. It is important for the candidate to be able to work independently and as part of a team. This position will provide an excellent opportunity to obtain training in various research methods/techniques (e.g. eye-tracking, EEG/ERP, fMRI). Therefore, whoever fulfills this role should be comfortable learning difficult technical skills. A bachelor's degree in Speech Language Pathology, Cognitive Science, Psychology, Education, or a related field is required.  Preferred qualifications include: strong technical and computer skills, previous research experience, and background working with young children.

Gap Year Position: Research Technician, CUMC Microbiology & Immunology

The Department of Microbiology & Immunology at Columbia University Medical Center seeks a Technician B with a background in molecular biology and tissue culture to assist the Principal Investigator of a dynamic, publication-driven research lab that studies malaria. The successful applicant will assist with the daily activities of a research group focused on Plasmodium falciparum parasite biology with a particular emphasis on understanding the molecular basis of drug resistance in malaria, drug discovery research, and the role of genes in malaria pathogenesis. The Technician B will be expected to conduct P. falciparum culture work, including maintenance of parasites, drug assays, generation of drug-resistant parasites, and parasite cloning, under supervision. S/he will also be expected to assist with general lab management including maintaining adequate supplies of reagents, national/international shipping and contact with vendors. We are looking for a research technician who would like to stay for 2-3 years prior to pursuing further studies in a PhD or MD program. The position would begin preferably in June 2019.
