Bringing Smiles Dental Enrichment Program at NYU College of Dentistry

The mission of Bringing Smiles Dental Enrichment Program is to support and encourage underrepresented minority/disadvantaged background undergraduate students seeking entrance into dental school to have successful and impactful professional careers.

The program has 4 main components: 

Community-Based Clinical Experience - interns participate in the “Bringing Smiles to NYC Schools” program, a school-based comprehensive dental program located within NYC public schools.

Mentorship - each intern will be connected to both a faculty mentor and a dental student mentor whom they will meet with throughout the semester.

Seminars and Application Preparation - interns will participate in a series of seminars and professional development experiences to prepare them for dental school.

Research Opportunities - interns will be connected to potential research opportunity at the college.

Osteopathic Medicine Resources Re: COVID-19

The American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) has compiled resources for prospective applicants in their COVID-19 Resource page. Please note that this page is being continuously updated in real time. They intend for this web-page to be home to all admissions requirement changes due to COVID-19 at each of the Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine. 

So far, there has been one change to the application. AACOM has added a question to the 2020-2021 AACOMAS Application prompting applicants to describe how COVID-19 has impacted their pathway to medical school. The question is open ended and allows applicants up to 2500 characters for them to describe any academic, personal, financial or professional barriers that COVID-19 may have presented for them.

Exploring Osteopathic Medicine - April 23

Exploring Osteopathic Medicine is a virtual event intended for pre medical students interested in learning more about osteopathic medicine. Join the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) for this in-depth look at the osteopathic medical profession and what it means to be a DO. This virtual event will include panel discussions with live questions and answers from current medical students, practicing physicians, and admissions representatives. AACOM will give an overview of AACOMAS, the primary application to osteopathic medical school, offer tips and tricks on how to ace the AACOMAS application. AACOM is thrilled to welcome Dr. Jen Caudle as a speaker for the event. Dr. Jen is a board certified family medicine physician known for her appearances on local and national news networks including the TODAY Show, the Dr. Oz Show, CNN, Steve Harvey Show, and many others.

National Hispanic Medical Association Virtual Conference - April 16

National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) College Health Scholars Program has had to cancel its San Antonio and Washington, DC Pre-Health Conferences.  However, we believe that this should not impede upon our goal and mission to increase the number of Hispanics and underrepresented students in medical, dental, pharmacy, graduate nursing, graduate public health, and graduate science research schools.  This is why we've moved our pre-health conference to a webinar.  

The webinar will be on April 16, 2020, from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM Eastern Time.  Students can hop on and off just like a pre-health conference.  We will be talking about admissions, financial aid, and will also feature current graduate students who can answer questions from undergrads.

AMCAS Webinar for Applicants - April 21

On Tuesday, April 21^st at 2:00 p.m. ET the AAMC will host the Navigating the 2021 AMCAS Application Cycle for Applicants webinar. This 90-minute session will prepare applicants for the 2021 AMCAS application cycle. Attendees will receive a walkthrough of the AMCAS application, available AMCAS resources and more! Register today.

Currently, all AMCAS services are continuing regular operations and there are no changes to application timelines and milestones. The AAMC is continuing to monitor guidance from the CDC and WHO and have processes in place should they need to make operational adjustments during this rapidly changing situation.

Dinner with Doctors - April 1

On Wednesday, April 1st, Barnard’s Network of Pre-Medical Students will be hosting our annual event Dinner with Doctors on Barnard College's campus from 7-9 PM.

In this event, you would be seated at a table and have dinner with Barnard premed students and a doctor to speak with them about their journey and to answer any questions you may have about a career in medicine. Last year, some of the questions were on topics related to the path to medical school and beyond, life as a physician, and selecting a specialty. Last year, the event was very successful - over 50 of our pre-medical students attended the event along with physicians affiliated with Columbia University Medical Center, Mt. Sinai, and more. We hope to have another great turnout this year.

The event will take place in The James Room, located on the 4th floor of Barnard Hall.
