Why Is There Confusion About Whether Masks Prevent COVID-19? Public Perceptions, Misperceptions and the Messaging of Science

A recent Cochrane report, purporting to show limited data to support mandates to use masks to prevent COVID-19 has sparked immense controversy, seized by many critics as evidence of failures by public health officials. Columbia University Bioethics Program Director Dr. Robert Klitzman will be moderating a panel of national experts who will analyze the report, its limitations, its media coverage and lessons we can learn as we move forward.

PA Virtual Fair Register Today!

 The PA Education Association (PAEA) invites you to register for the PA Program Virtual Fair on Wednesday, May 10 from 9:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. ET. This is a free event for all students interested in exploring a career as a PA or preparing to apply in CASPA. Students will be able to:

     • Chat with representatives from over 85 PA programs, PAEA, and CASPA
     • Attend live presentations and Q&As (or access the recordings on-demand) from current students, practicing PAs, and admissions reps on topics like:

Interested in Medicine? Social Justice and Human Rights? A leadership position on campus? All three?! Join the Doctors Without Borders Student Chapter at Columbia University for 2023-2024 year!

Our student chapter was created with the mission to bring together a group of like-minded individuals dedicated to advocacy and the principles of humanitarian medicine that aims to advance medical ethics and improve access to healthcare globally.

Our student chapter seeks to create a community in which students can thoroughly learn about, support, and advocate for several international contexts of refugees, minority and women’s rights, environmental justice, and mental health.

We facilitate these spaces through a variety of events and actions including, but not limited to, teaching life-saving skills used by MSF doctors abroad, advocacy campaigns, speakers and mentors from MSF aid workers (The MSF Headquarters is very close to campus!), film screenings, fundraising efforts, petition drives, and other events on and around campus!

Summer Dental Immersion Program at OHSU

Oregon Health Sciences University School of Dentistry invites applications to their Academic Immersion Program, to be held May 22 - June 2, 2023. This program includes:

Register Now for Ethics for Lunch: Treatment Over Objection



 In person and online presentation and discussion of a clinical case focusing on treatment over objection with Katherine Fischkoff, MD.

Lunch will be provided for those choosing to attend in person at CUIMC VP&S Amp 1. Online attendance is also available via Zoom.

Katherine Fischkoff, MD is a general and acute care surgeon, with a special interest in medical ethics. Dr. Fischkoff’s clinical skills and research expertise have earned her recognition as Medical Director for the Surgical Step Down Unit and Vice-Chair of the Department of Surgery’s Quality and Patient Safety Committee. She has produced influential research in the field of medical ethics to help clarify the role of the surgeon in difficult ethical situations. During the COVID pandemic, she led the way in developing standard-of-care recommendations to guide the diverse and numerous ethics challenges faced by all healthcare workers.

Dr. Fischkoff earned her medical degree from George Washington University and went on to receive specialized training at NYU, Cornell and Memorial-Sloan Kettering before joining the team at Columbia.

Join Us: MSPH 4+1 Info Session

Register for our upcoming Spring 4+1 Mailman School of Public Health Information Session! Barnard and Columbia faculty, facilitated by Beyond Barnard, will cover the basics of the 4+1 degree, the application process, coursework and credit requirements, and offer time at the end for questions. This event is strongly recommended for any freshman or sophomores interested in applying for the 4+1 pathway their Junior year. 

The 4+1 Pathways offer Barnard students the opportunity to obtain a Masters degree from Columbia on an accelerated timeline in an area of their choosing. This session is for those interested in the pathways with Columbia's Mailman School of Public Health.
