Volunteer Opportunity – Columbia University Irving Medical Center

 Description:

We wish to advise you that we have a volunteer position available immediately for Seniors, Post-Baccalaureate Students, and recent Graduates, in the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology. The volunteer will provide assistance on multiple ongoing clinical research protocols. Significant duties will include keeping records of test project results, conducting online literature research, and assisting with manuscript/grant proposal preparation.

 

Volunteers may have the opportunity to observe in the Pediatric Endocrinology Clinic and attend weekly clinical rounds in addition to their volunteer time. Volunteers must be willing to commit to 8 hours a week. Hours can be split across two days. 

 

Please note, this is a non-compensable volunteer opportunity.

 

Qualifications:

Volunteers should have or be enrolled in coursework in chemistry, biology, physics or a related science or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

 

The applicant must demonstrate an ability to effectively communicate, an ability to perform work in a neat and orderly manner, and an ability to learn and adapt to new techniques.

 

Proficiency with computer operations and software programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel is required.

SHPEP Application Open

The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) is a free summer program for students to explore their interests in medicine, dentistry, nursing, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy, public health, and more. With the goal of increasing the acceptance rates of applicants that apply to health professions schools who come from underrepresented and marginalized communities, the Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) National Program Office and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation offer a stipend of $1000 for participation. 

SHPEP is open to first-year and sophomore students who meet other eligibility criteria. Visit the SHPEP National Program Office website to learn more. For students who are not eligible for SHPEP, we recommend they check out the "For Students" section of the website, which includes pathway resources and other opportunities to gain research and clinical exposure.

The SHPEP application for summer 2024 is open now and due February 5, 2024 - visit the website to apply and check out the application resources to help you along the way.

WCM Regional Pre-Medical Conference - Dec. 2

 Weill Cornell Medicine invites you to their annual virtual Pre-Medical Conference on Saturday, December 2, 2023, 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM. The conference is open to high school and college students interested in the health professions, and is sponsored by WCM's Office of Student Diversity and Students for Equal Opportunity in Medicine.

NYU Clinical Volunteer Programs in Emergency Medicine

Looking for clinical opportunities in spring and summer 2024? Consider applying to volunteer programs at NYU like Project Healthcare and PAVERS. 

Project Healthcare is an intensive summer volunteer program that allows participants to rotate through clinical areas of the Bellevue Hospital emergency departments and are paired with a resident mentor. PAVERS is a patient advocacy volunteer program that allows students to learn about medicine through observation in the emergency department during the academic year. 

The Spring 2024 PAVERS application will open on October 1^st, 2023, while the Summer 2024 application for Project Healthcare will open on November 1^st, 2023. Check the links for more info and application deadlines!

Interested students are also welcome to attend NYU Langone’s Community Board Health Fair. This fair will be held at NYU Langone’s Manhattan Campus on October 14^th, 2023, from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM, and staff members for PAVERS and Project Healthcare will be on hand to answer questions.
