As the fall semester winds down, many students are beginning to consider opportunities for the coming summer. Though summer seems far away, many application deadlines are set for the early winter, so students are encouraged to begin thinking about opportunities and submitting applications now. If you don't know where to start, Health Professions Advising can help! Check out our list of summer opportunities (note: you need to be signed in to gBear in order to access the sheet) to learn about 160+ options for your summer. These include research and clinical opportunities, public health programs, enrichment programs, and summer courses across the country (and even a few outside the US!). Please note that many of these programs, particularly research-based opportunities, offer generous stipends as well as housing and travel cost coverage, in many cases. Check back frequently, as the list is updated when new program information is made available.

Yeshiva University EMT Course - Spring 2019

Yeshiva University EMS is organizing an emergency medical technician (EMT) course for undergraduate students, open to all university students in the New York City area. The course will take place on 15 Sundays during the spring semester (between February 3 and May 12) from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on one of Yeshiva University's campuses, and the cost of the course is $1500. In order to be eligible for the course, students must be 18 years of age by the state exam date (May 16, 2019).

Project Healthcare Applications Open

Project Healthcare is the NYU School of Medicine's annual summer intensive clinical experience. The program operates in both Manhattan (Bellevue Hospital Center) and Sunset Park, Brooklyn (NYU Langone Hospital - Brooklyn).

Via Project Healthcare, students are given the unique opportunity to play an active role in patient care in one of NYU’s active emergency departments. Through hands on experience, volunteers are able to explore a diverse array of interests and are exposed to the reality of a career in medicine.  The volunteers learn to function as patient advocates, and are also exposed to numerous aspects of patient care while working closely with the clinical staff. The 10-week intensive summer program is open to college students and recent graduates nationwide.

In addition to the Emergency Department, which includes adult and pediatric emergency rooms (including trauma) as well as the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program, all participants rotate through the Operating Room and Cardiac Catheterization Lab to observe and help facilitate care.  They ride along with FDNY EMTs, and spend time with the Social Work staff where they learn about the social needs of patients suffering with issues such as domestic violence, sexual assault, substance abuse, and/or homelessness. In addition, the program features. community engagement events and a social medicine course.

Summer Health Professions Education Program Kick-Off Webinar

The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) is a free summer enrichment program focused on improving access to information and resources for college students interested in the health professions. SHPEP’s goal is to strengthen the academic proficiency and career development of students underrepresented in the health professions and prepare them for a successful application and matriculation to health professions schools. These students include, but are not limited to, individuals who identify as African American/Black, American Indian and Alaska Native and Hispanic/Latino, and who are from communities of socioeconomic and educational disadvantage.

SHPEP is implemented at 12 universities across the nation. Each institution provides scholars with academic enrichment in the basic sciences and math, clinical experiences, career development activities, learning and study skills seminars, and a financial planning workshop.

Applications to SHPEP are open to freshmen and sophomores, and interested students are encouraged to join the SHPEP kick-off webinar on Thursday, December 6, 2018 to hear more about this unique opportunity directly from the National Program Office as well as SHPEP alumni. Register here!

SUNY Optometry Winter Open House

SUNY Optometry's Winter Open House is a great opportunity to explore the profession by meeting faculty members, learning what it is like to be an optometry student by interacting with current students, and learning tips on how to build a competitive application. The Open House will take place on Thursday, January 10th, 2019 from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM. Register here to attend!

Columbia SHPSP Application Open

Columbia's Summer Public Health Scholars Program (SPHSP) is currently accepting applications until January 31, 2019.

This program is a partnership between Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, College of Dental Medicine, School of Nursing, and the Mailman School of Public Health. SPHSP is designed to increase interest in and knowledge of public health and biomedical careers for juniors, seniors, and recent undergraduates. This competitive program equips students with the skill set and tools they need to pursue public health by providing rigorous public health coursework, hands-on field experience, seminars and workshops, and mentorship opportunities in New York City.

The 10-week program begins with a one-week orientation and ends with a showcase and expo at the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta. Students are introduced to members of the CDC and have the opportunity to present their summer projects. All accepted students will receive housing accommodations on Columbia University’s Morningside campus along with a living stipend. All travel for students will also be covered by the program.

The program will be hosting a virtual information session via Facebook Live for students who are interested in learning more about SPHSP. Students interested in participating in the virtual information session can add SHPSP on Facebook (@Sphsp Columbia) and join the Facebook Live this Friday, November 16^th at 3:00 PM EST.

Yale Q-Med Conference

Sponsored by The Dean's Advisory Council for LGBTQI+ Affairs at Yale School of Medicine

The Q-Med: Building LGBTQI+ Leaders in Health Care conference (March 30-31, 2019) aims to engage and inspire future LGBTQI+ leaders in health care in the areas of research, clinical care, education, and policy/advocacy. It will feature keynote speakers, posters, interactive workshops with practical tools and strategies designed to address the unique challenges facing LGBTQI+ leaders.

Current health professional students (e.g., medical, nursing, physician assistant, podiatry, dentistry, clinical psychology, biomedical research, social work, and public health students) and university undergraduate students with an interest in health care as a profession are invited to attend. Though the content of the conference will be geared toward students, others with an interest in working with students to develop LGBTQI+ leaders in health care (e.g., residents, advanced trainees, and faculty) are invited to participate.

Barnard welcomes back Dr. Nieca Goldberg '79, a pioneer in women's heart health for the Being the First series. Being the First showcases trailblazers and those who were "the first" in their field. Goldberg graduated from Barnard College and received her medical degree from SUNY Downstate Medical Center. Author of the award-winning book The Women's Healthy Heart Program, Goldberg is the medical director of the Joan H. Tisch Center for Women's Health at NYU Langone, a national spokesperson for the American Heart Association, and she started the "Go Red for Women" campaign. Nikki Youngblood Giles, associate dean for Beyond Barnard, joins Goldberg to discuss her education at Barnard, her thoughts on research and medical care for women, the value of a STEM education, and the trajectory of her career.
