Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Deadline Extended

The State University of New York Upstate Medical University, College of Graduate Studies is offering fellowships for its 2022 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program. The aim of the SURF program is to expose undergraduate students to biomedical research. In an intensive ten-week summer program, undergraduates with appropriate faculty help will formulate their own proposal, carry out research under the supervision of one of our faculty, write a research paper and have the opportunity to see their work published. In the process, students will attend research seminars, present and participate in a student journal club, present their work, and participate in discussions on alternative careers in research and how to apply to graduate school. Students are given ample opportunities to interact directly with many of our faculty and graduate students.

There is also a special pathway (SURF-PS) and admissions option for SURF fellows interested in a career path of a physician-scientist.   This initiative is aimed at exposing undergraduates, specifically students from backgrounds under-represented in science and healthcare.  Prospective fellows will apply alongside traditional SURF students. Accepted fellows will be exposed to basic and translational science alongside both a PI and a current MD/PhD student mentor that is in the PhD portion of training. Fellows will have the opportunity to fulfill clinical curiosity in weekly rounds with a MD/PhD clinical faculty. The remaining requirements and events are the same as their fellow SURF peers.

The program runs from Monday, June 6, 2022, through Friday, August 12, 2022.

Each fellow will be provided a $3,500 stipend for the period plus housing.

Applicants to the program should be undergraduate students in good academic standing, who will be between their junior and senior years during the summer of 2022, and are majors in chemistry, biology, or a related field. Applicants must have a strong interest in pursuing a Ph.D. degree in biomedical research.

The main criteria for the selection of fellows will be personal scholarship, academic excellence, and the match of applicant interests with those of participating SUNY Upstate Medical University biomedical faculty members. International students who currently have a J-1 or F-1 visa, and who are already attending school in the United States, are eligible to apply.

Application deadline is February, 28, 2022.

Job Opportunity: Clinical Research Coordinator, Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School

Clinical Research Coordinator positions at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School

The focus of our research is on self-injury and depression among youth. We are currently looking to hire one to two full-time clinical research coordinators to assist with NIMH-and American Foundation for Suicide Prevention-funded studies aimed at improving short-term risk prediction for suicidal behavior in adolescents. Studies assessing proximal risk for suicidal behavior use computational methods to model neurocognitive markers and/or ambulatory indices (i.e., mobile technology including actigraphy, passive sensing of physiological arousal, passive sensing of social engagement and physical activity, and ecological momentary assessment) in psychiatrically hospitalized youth (see RF1MH120830, R01MH124899, R01MH115905, K23MH126168). Additional studies focus on employing computer vision to identify visual indicators of suicide risk among adolescents (R21MH127231, YIG-1-020-20). Research coordinators will work under the mentorship of Dr. Richard Liu and Dr. Taylor Burke at Massachusetts General Hospital. These positions are particularly well suited for individuals seeking to gain research and clinical experience prior to graduate or medical school.

Duties & Responsibilities:
Responsibilities will include: data collection and management; clinical interviewing; participant recruitment, retention, and reimbursement; interfacing with the hospital clinical staff and participants recruited from the adolescent inpatient units; supervision of undergraduate volunteers; literature reviews; and IRB submissions and modifications. There may be opportunities to conduct independent research, submit presentations to national conferences, and prepare manuscripts for publication.

Qualifications:
Qualified applicants must have a bachelor's degree, strong writing, organizational, and interpersonal skills, and be able to work autonomously as well within a collaborative team environment. Experience with data management and statistical software (e.g., SPSS, REDCap, Mplus, R) and with writing scripts in E-Prime and Python are preferred but not required. Psychology, sociology, and premed majors are encouraged to apply, but all are welcome. Prior research, particularly independent research projects, or clinical experience is strongly recommended.

Application information:
The start date is Summer 2022. Interested applicants are invited to submit a cover letter and CV to MGHmoodandbehaviorlab@gmail.com. Any questions regarding these positions may be directed to Rachel Levin at MGHmoodandbehaviorlab@gmail.com.
