Reminder: Dean Cohen's Maternity Leave

Re-posted from March 31, 2017:

Dear Pre-health Students,

As many of you are aware, I am pregnant and will be going out on maternity leave shortly after the last day of classes. My last day in the office is this Friday, May 5th.  I will return on a part-time basis at the end of August and return full time in October.

Although many of you are away for the summer and rarely seek advising, I wanted to let you know that the other advising deans in the Dean of Studies Office will be available for general pre-health advising questions. And as always, Melisa Adiram, our administrative assistant, will be more than happy to assist you. Please direct all questions and concerns related to pre-health to our email alias: prehealthadvising@barnard.edu).

To schedule an appointment with a Dean:
Please visit the 'Meet with the Deans' webpage and/or call the office (212-854-2024) to schedule an appointment

I wish you all a wonderful summer! I look forward to reconnecting at the start of next semester. Thank you all in advance for your patience and understanding.

Best wishes,
Dean Cohen

Direct all questions to jld2203@barnard.edu

Life at the End of Life, Thurs. 4:10-6:00 amst un3930, section 6
Robert Pollack
This seminar is designed to provide opportunities for readings and reflections on the experience of volunteer service work in the At Your Service program at Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Care Center. Students will learn how to critically reflect on their experiences at the health care center in the context of questions raised in the texts read in the seminar. Shared experiences and reflections on texts and interactions at TCC will enhance the critical reflection of all students engaged in the course. Students will experience what it means to be a long-term or short-term patient in a nursing home. Students will provide assistance and support, whether emotional or recreational, or by simply serving as the person consistently there for someone during chronic illness or at the end of their life.  At the core of this framework is the patient; however, it is important to think about the impact this will have on the student as well. Students will develop skills necessary to critically reflect on the significance of emotional care as a medical practitioner, as well as form a deeper understanding of the role of palliative care and comfort care in a life cycle of care.  Students are required to read The Anatomy of Hope by Jerome Groopman, M.D., and What Doctors Feel: How Emotions Affect the Practice of Medicine by Danielle Ofri, M.D. Ph.D. At least one prior semester of volunteer work in a clinical setting relevant to the syllabus is recommended. Application required.
