Today's feature is Dean Melinda Cohen, our Dean for Health Professions Advising!
FROM: The best state in the country, California!
COLLEGE MAJOR: A DANCE major. Bet you didn't guess that one?!? And an English minor. I jokingly refer to my time as a dancer as my past life, because I don't think I could ever get through a dance class now! I tried a few years ago and couldn't remember the steps to make it through the routine. It was so embarrassing! So now I just enjoy yoga and barre classes.
IF I WEREN'T A DEAN I'D BE A: I honestly LOVE my job (and I'm not just saying that!), but if I weren't in this position and could easily change careers with a snap of my finger, I would love to be a Nurse Practitioner and focus on Women's Health.
LEAST FAVORITE CLASS AS AN UNDERGRAD: Hmmm....I think I've blocked out my worst class. HA! While I tried to enjoy history classes, I was terrible at them (I could never remember all the dates and names). So inevitably those were my least favorite classes despite the interesting content.
FAVORITE CLASS AS AN UNDERGRAD Kinesiology. I also loved my Cultural Anthropology and 20th Century African American Literature class (yay for liberal arts education)
FAVORITE BOOK/AUTHOR: Its so hard to pick! I loved reading this past year All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. It was such an interesting and moving story that was beautifully written.
BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I WOULD GIVE MY 20-YR-OLD SELF: Study abroad and go travel as much as possible! You don't often have the opportunity or money when you work full time and have young children.
GO-TO-SONGS WHEN SINGING IN THE SHOWER: I'm banned from singing too much in my household because my voice is so terrible (at least according to my husband). Lately, I constantly have nursery rhymes in my head (Old McDonald had a farm...) which I can thank my 2-year-old daughter for.
WHAT I LIKE BEST ABOUT WORKING AT BARNARD: I absolutely love supporting and empowering young women to pursue health careers and getting to be a part of their journey. It gives me so much pleasure to see students succeed and pursue their passion(s).
UNIQUE FUN FACTS: I grew up in a community with horses and rode horses for a few years when I was younger. I absolutely love animals and wish I could live on a farm.
IF I COULD BE A DISNEY PRINCESS, I WOULD BE... I just watched the Little Mermaid this past weekend with my daughter. I wish I could sing like Ariel.
STRANGEST THING EVER EATEN: I'm not daring enough to have eaten anything that falls into the "strange" category- at least that I know of! I would have to say Liver Pate probably falls closest to this category: I liked the taste of it, but can't bare to think about where it came from or the process to make it.
FAVORITE THING TO SPEND MONEY ON: A night out for dinner and a Broadway show with my husband
THREE THINGS THAT MAKE ME REALLY HAPPY: There are so many things, but if I had to boil it down: my 2 year old daughter, my husband and really great dessert
IF I COULD LEARN ONE RANDOM SKILL, IT WOULD BE: Cake Decorating. I think I'm a good baker, but I can never design my baked goods to look as good as they taste. I also would love to learn flower arrangement. I love flowers and really enjoy working with the different colors, textures and designs.
