Role information:
Correctional Health Services provides comprehensive healthcare for all individuals housed in the New York City jail system on Rikers Island. Summer interns will support important population health projects that aim to improve overall health outcomes. Project areas may include examining HIV-related outcomes, tracking viral hepatitis program data, and assisting with tracking age-appropriate preventative care programming. Interns will also have opportunities to shadow medical and social service providers and other interdisciplinary correctional health staff.
Requirements:
- June – August 2025
- Time commitment: At least three days per week on-site (on Rikers Island)
- Location: Rikers Island (students must be able to travel to Rikers Island – public transportation is available)
- Fingerprinting and a background check are required as part of the Rikers Island clearance process
- This opportunity is best suited for rising Juniors or Seniors who are pre-med, pre-health, or have an interest in public health
- There are no academic prerequisites; however, students should be willing to learn quickly and to be able to work independently
- The internship is unpaid, but CHS is happy to support any applications for external funding
