Mentorship Opportunity: PULSE

PULSE is a national educational organization dedicated to breaking barriers to medical education for premed students. With mentorship at the heart of its program, PULSE connects aspiring medical professionals with experienced physicians. Its mission is to empower students from all walks of life, including first-generation college students, individuals with disabilities, LGBTQ+ identifying students, and those from underserved areas or other marginalized groups.

Students are matched with a physician mentor specializing in a field of interest. The mentorship program offers flexible scheduling, allowing students to connect with their mentor virtually or in-person. Over the course of 3-4 months, students will have at least 3 facilitated sessions to learn about their mentor’s career journey and discuss relevant topics.

Summer Opportunity: Columbia-WHO Center for Global Mental Health Internship

Since 2016, the Columbia-WHO Center for Global Mental Health has hosted a competitive summer internship for rising senior undergraduates interested in the growing field of global mental health.

Students participating in the Summer Internship Program will participate in a variety of didactic, career, and professional development seminars and will receive mentorship from 1-3 faculty members engaged in varied global mental health research and training initiatives. Through experiential learning, students will engage in research through placement-based global mental health projects that will be assigned according to their interests and project availability prior to the start of the internship. Additionally, students will gain exposure to networking within the healthcare research environment and develop the skills to apply an equity-informed lens into global mental health research and implementation.

The summer internship typically starts in June and runs for 8 weeks, with students attending daily seminar sessions and working on their assigned projects from Monday through Thursday. More information available here; eligible students may apply for funding via BBIP.

 

SUNY Upstate Summer Research & Post-Bac Opportunities

 Research Fellowship (SURF) programs are 10-weeks summer programs that would run from June 2 to August 8, 2025. The program offers participants a $6,200 stipend along with free university housing. In addition to our traditional SURF program, we offer specialty SURF programs including SURF Physician-scientist program (SURF PS), SURF Cancer Research Program (SURF CR) and SURF Health Science Program (SURF HS). Deadline for SURF programs application is February 1, 2025! 

Along with the above four summer programs, we also offer the Post-Baccalaureate Research and Education (PREP-UP) program, which is a one year program that runs from June 2025 to May 2026. Stipend and other benefits are included along with the opportunity of taking two full-credit courses of free charge. Students will attend research seminars, participate in a student journal club, present their research, and participate in discussions on research career development and how to apply to graduate school.

UM-SMART Applications Open

Applications for UM-SMART, a 10-week summer undergraduate research program sponsored by the University of Michigan Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP, which is an MD/PhD program) on the medical campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, are open.  UM-SMART is designed for undergraduate students who have an interest in obtaining a combined MD/PhD degree leading to a career in academic medicine as a physician-scientist performing basic research relevant to human health and disease. As a UM-SMART summer research fellow, students work full-time in a basic research laboratory under the mentorship of a research faculty member.  More detailed information on UM-SMART is detailed below.

The goal of the UM-SMART program is to help students decide if a career as a physician-scientist is right for them, and to enhance competitiveness when applying to MD/PhD programs.  The UM-SMART has helped 119 undergraduate participants learn about MD/PhD training since 2008.  After graduation, 77% of past participants entered MD/PhD, PhD, or MD programs.  This 10-week program is aimed at students who have some amount of basic and mechanistic research experience related to medicine and are interested in gaining more experience to advance their career goals.  UM-SMART is not intended for students seeking clinical research experience on human subjects.  Additionally, we do not offer opportunities in public health, the social sciences, or humanities.

Program dates:  May 27 - August 3, 2025

Program Highlights:

Students participating in a lab receive a stipend of $4,700 plus residence hall housing and a meal allowance.

The main scientific focus of the summer program is to provide full-time laboratory biomedical research, as well as

• Two half day clinical shadowing experiences
• Online MCAT preparation accessible for 12 months
• Oral and Poster presentation and relevant seminars
• “Big Sib” Mentoring Program

Eligibility:

Applicants belonging to groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in biomedical research are strongly encouraged to apply. This includes:  Individuals from underrepresented racial or ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities, such as those with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds such as family annual income below established low-income thresholds, or an educational environment that has inhibited the individual from obtaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to develop and participate in a research career.

In addition, applicants must

• Be a US Citizen or permanent resident of the US
• Complete sophomore year by June 1, 2025
• Maintain a minimum 3.2 grade point average
• Complete 100 hours of research lab experience by June 1, 2025
• Submit two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a research mentor or the instructor of a laboratory course.

Pos-Bac Opportunity: MIT Research Scholars Program

 Outstanding graduating seniors or recent college graduates who plan to pursue a research career in neuroscience or cognitive science are encouraged to apply to our two-year, fully funded post-baccalaureate program.

The program is designed to provide additional research and academic training to individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who are preparing to apply to PhD programs.
 
Participants will conduct cutting-edge supervised research in a lab at MIT, and will have the opportunity to take courses at MIT, while gaining knowledge and experience. Physics, math, psychology, engineering and computer science majors who are interested in the brain and/or cognitive sciences are welcome to apply.
 
Participants receive a highly competitive stipend, health benefits and tuition remission. The stipend is matched to that of PhD students in the department.

MSK Bridge Post-Bac

The MSK Bridge program aims to provide post-baccalaureate trainees from traditionally underrepresented (URM) groups with a strong foundation in science and research, as well as guided mentoring that will help them successfully transition into biomedical PhD programs. Successful applicants to the program — known as Bridge Scholars — will conduct a research project in one of MSK’s scientific laboratories for up to 24 months. The overarching goal of MSK Bridge is to increase the participation of URM scientists in biomedical fields.

The incoming cohort of Bridge Scholars will start in July 2025, with the deadline to receive all application materials: February 21, 2025. Scholars receive a competitive stipend ($47,741K), relocation expenses reimbursement, health benefits and access to MSK rental housing (more info on the flyer attached).

Job Opportunity: Clinical Research Coordinator, Mt Sinai Spinal Cord Injury Research Center Department of Rehabilitation

Description

The Clinical Research Coordinator is an entry human subjects researcher, responsible for conducting and assisting in clinical research studies under the supervision of the Principal Investigator or senior clinical research staff. This individual obtains informed consent, collects, maintains and organizes study information. Assists in the preparation and submission of grant applications and documents (e.g., Institutional Review Board, Grants and Contracts Office).

Responsibilities

• Conducts routine and standardized human subjects research using appropriate research or interview techniques specific to subject matter of the research project, under direct supervision of the Principal Investigator or senior clinical research staff.
• Assists in the activities related to clinical research including, but not limited to: obtaining informed consent, screening participants for eligibility, registering patients with sponsoring agencies, administering questionnaires and answering telephone calls.
• Assists in the collection, analysis and review of experimental data for publication and presentation.
• Maintains source documents and subject files in accordance with Mount Sinai policies and procedures. Ensures accurate, confidential and complete compilation of data.
• May secure and ship clinical specimens as required by the protocol.
• May assist in the preparation for regulatory agency site visits.
• Performs other related duties

Qualifications

• Bachelors degree in science or related field preferred or a combination of relevant research experience and education
• 0-2 years of research/human subjects experience
