We are excited to launch our new application system, and will share specific dates and deadlines beginning the week of January 6, 2020. Because we will be starting the application process slightly later than usual, Parts I and II of the application will be available to all applicants at the same time.

Project Healthcare Application Open

NYU Grossman School of Medicine's annual summer intensive clinical program, Project Healthcare, is accepting applications for Summer 2020! Students have an option of working at the Manhattan (Bellevue Hospital Center) or Brooklyn (NYU Langone Hospital – Brooklyn) location.

As a member of Project Healthcare students are given the unique opportunity to play an active role in patient care in one of NYU’s active Emergency Departments. Through hands on experience, in one of New York City’s level 1 Trauma Centers, volunteers are able to explore a diverse array of interests and are exposed to the reality of a career in medicine. The volunteers learn to function as patient advocates, and are also exposed to numerous aspects of patient care while working closely with the clinical staff.

In addition to the Emergency Department, which includes adult and pediatric emergency rooms (including trauma) as well as the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program, all participants rotate through the Operating Room and Cardiac Catheterization Lab to observe and help facilitate care. They ride along with FDNY EMTs, and spend time with the Social Work staff where they learn about the social needs of patients suffering with issues such as domestic violence, sexual assault, substance abuse, and/or homelessness. The program also offers community engagement events, a topical and appropriate NYU medical curriculum, and a social medicine course.

More information and the application for Project Healthcare can be accessed through this link. The application for Project Healthcare 2020 is now open and will officially close on WednesdayFebruary 5th at 11:59pm. The application requires the submission of a personal statement, an updated resume and two letters of recommendation. Please note that no particular previous experiences are required.

Steps to Success with the SHPEP Application Webinar

The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) is a free summer enrichment program focused on improving access to information and resources for college students interested in the health professions. SHPEP is implemented at 12 universities across the nation. Each institution provides scholars with academic enrichment in the basic sciences and math, clinical experiences, career development activities, learning and study skills seminars, and a financial planning workshop.

Applications to SHPEP are open to freshmen and sophomores, and interested students are encouraged to join the Steps to Success with the SHPEP Application on Wednesday, December 18, 2019 to hear more about this unique opportunity directly from the National Program Office and learn tips to present the best application. Register here!

These sessions will cover the same information, so you need only plan to attend one (and the webinar will be recorded, in case anyone has conflicts with both times). We’ll cover two main topics: 1) assessing your readiness to apply to professional programs and 2) how to apply for a Committee Letter of Evaluation. These sessions are especially relevant for any prospective applicants to medical or dental school who plan to submit their professional school applications in summer 2020.

This spring 2020, the Yeshiva University EMS club is organizing an emergency medical technician (EMT) program for undergraduate students. This semester we will be having two course options!

Course 1: (Accelerated Course)
15 Sundays, from 10 am - 6 pm
8 hours each session
Start Date: January 26th
Location: YU midtown campus located at 245 Lexington Avenue

Course 2: (Regular Course)
24 Sundays, from 1:30 pm - 6:30 pm
5 hour each session
Start Date: Either Beginning of December or January 26th.
Location: YU uptown campus located at 500 W 185th street

The cost of the course is $1,500. (If finances are an issue, there are many volunteer ambulance/fire organizations that will pay for your course in return for becoming an active member! Seek out your local agencies for more details. In addition, the NYS Department of Health can issue a ~700$ voucher through a NY volunteer ambulance/fire organization to help pay for the course!)
Minimum age is 17 by the state exam.

With previous courses run in the past, we have found the accelerated course to be in high demand. However, there are many students that either have class or other obligations on Sunday mornings which would unfortunately prevent them from enrolling in our program. Therefore, we have decided to adapt our program to meet the needs of both types of students.

There will be no classes on Jewish holidays.

Please sign up if you are interested and want more information.

Winthrop-LIDA Birth Doula Project November Training

The Winthrop-LIDA Birth Doula Project is a coalition of women’s health practitioners at Winthrop University Hospital and Long Island Doula Association, Inc. (LIDA)-trained birth doulas seeking to improve birthing outcomes for mothers in our community. We are hoping to recruit and train individuals interested in offering continuous, evidence-based birth support to women in labor and their partners. Specifically, we are seeking individuals who have not graduated from a nursing program. The Winthrop-LIDA Project is a unique clinical opportunity for any student interested in:
        Gaining hands-on, meaningful, clinical exposure
Empowering women to become agents of their bodies and health
Promoting mother and baby-friendly childbirth initiatives
Exploring birth doula work, midwifery, or obstetrics as possible professional trajectories
Birth doulas provide emotional, physical and informational support to women in labor. The benefits of birthing with birth doulas are numerous, including:
Personalization and respect of individual birthing choices
Promotion of breastfeeding and maternal-infant bonding
        Increased rates of vaginal delivery
Acknowledgement of birth as a natural process
        Increased maternal satisfaction
Volunteers will not only gain holistic exposure to the field of women’s health, but will also be fulfilled by their abilities to affect positive change in the diverse patient population they will serve.
But please note: This doula project training does not certify participants to become a doula in private practice. For more information on how to become a private pay doula after this training workshop please visit: How to become a certified birth doula after completing the NYU Winthrop-LIDA doula project
Our next training is November 9th and 10th. If you are interested in registering for the next training and learning about pre-training requirements, please reach out to winthroplida@gmail.com.
