Chemistry Department Course Updates

As we prepare for the new academic year, Barnard's Chemistry Department has made two important announcements about course offerings for prehealth students:

Planning to take General Chemistry I this year?
Consider enrolling in CHEM BC1004, Special Topics in Chemistry. This 0.5 credit, P/F course is open to students enrolled in General Chemistry I who wish to explore applications of chemistry to a wide range of topics. Students can choose from five different topics, meeting on different weekdays:
  • Monday: Chemistry and Racism
  • Tuesday: The Chemistry of Color
  • Wednesday: The Chemistry of COVID-19
  • Thursday: An Introduction to Chemical Engineering
  • Friday: The Chemistry of Lead
Looking for a second semester of general/inorganic chemistry this year?
Barnard's Chemistry Department will offer CHEM BC3232, Chemistry IV, during Spring 2021 and Summer Session A. This course is recommended as the second semester of general/inorganic chemistry for all prehealth students who are not majoring in chemistry or biochemistry. We've updated the Prehealth Coursework Guide under Prehealth Advising Resources in Handshake to reflect this curricular change!

Volunteer Opportunity: Online Tutoring with PhysioCamp

PhysioCamp is a series of free education sessions that seeks to expose students to the health sciences. Our mission is to provide insight and support for students who may have an interest in the healthcare field for their future careers. We allow the students to get hands-on learning experience with medical equipment and anatomic models. We also provide students with information on different career options in the medical field and their corresponding academic requirements.

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, we are unable to come out to the schools and provide that physical hands-on experience. However, as an alternative, we are providing free distance education via both tele-camps and 1-on-1 tele-tutoring for K-12 students.

We are looking for undergraduate volunteers willing to commit 1-3 hours a week to tutor K-12 students 1-on-1 virtually in any subject of your choosing. If you are interested in volunteering for tele-tutoring, click here to sign up!

Cambridge Coaching MCAT Webinar: Simple Acids and Bases

It's a weekly live webinar about a high yield MCAT topic. It's short, sweet, and packed with valuable insight into both the topic at hand and how it's tested on the MCAT. While we are in the process of developing these materials, we are offering the webinar for free. Consider yourself a pilot student for a future Cambridge Coaching MCAT course, or textbook, or self-study platform (only the future can tell). All we ask in exchange is that you keep coming, participate in Q & A, share your feedback, and let friends know about this resource. This is Part 1 of a 3-session series on Acids and Bases, with Salts and Buffers and then Titrations following in the next couple weeks. This event takes place Friday August 7 at 1pm EST.
