Committee Application Deadline Reminder

Students and alumnae who plan to apply to medical and dental programs in summer 2020: remember that the first deadline for Barnard's 2020 Committee Application will arrive on Sunday! 

The deadlines to submit a Committee application are:

• First-time applicants: February 9, 2020, 11:59 PM Eastern
• Reapplicants*: March 5, 2020, 11:59 PM Eastern

*You are considered a reapplicant if you have previously had a Barnard Committee letter submitted to application services on your behalf. All other applicants are considered first-time applicants, even if they have completed some or all of a previous Committee application.

Beyond Barnard Boston Field Trip - Biomedicine & Biotech Careers

Beyond Barnard is pleased to invite you to apply to travel with us to Boston, MA for a field trip to visit alumnae on site with careers in tech, biotech, and innovation. Our hosts include:

• Justine Levin-Allerhand '97 at the Broad Institute Institute of MIT and Harvard, supporting biomedical and genomic research 

• Libby McDonald '85 at the MIT D-Lab, designing for a more equitable world

• A third host and site -- likely a biomedical/pharma start-up or innovator -- details still to come!

We will end the day with a panel discussion and networking reception with Boston area Barnard alumnae.

The field trip to Boston, MA will take place March 12-14. This is a selective and structured program, hosted by esteemed alumnae and professionals. If you are offered and accept a place in the program, you must treat it as an unmovable commitment. Transportation and hotel expenses will be covered by Beyond Barnard.

Beyond Barnard's Field Trip Program provides groups of 15-20 Barnard students with the opportunity to connect with multiple organizations in New York City, nationally, and around the world. AMCAS Application Cycle Dates Announced

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) has announced important dates for the 2021 AMCAS application cycle (for those applying in summer 2020). 

The 2021 AMCAS cycle will open for applicants to begin completing their application on Monday, May 4, 2020 at 9:30 a.m. ET. Applicants will be able to submit their applications to AMCAS for processing beginning Thursday, May 28, 2020 at 9:30 a.m. ET. AMCAS will begin transmitting applicant data to medical schools on Friday, June 26, 2020 at 7:00 a.m. ET.

Zucker School of Medicine Pipeline Program Application Open

The mission of the Zucker School of Medicine Pipeline Program (ZPP) at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell (Zucker School of Medicine), is to enhance the matriculation of underrepresented in medicine (URM) students and economically disadvantaged students to the Zucker School of Medicine. The three-year, summer intensive, academic enrichment program is designed to provide high achieving college students who are interested in a career in medicine an opportunity for direct matriculation to the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.

ZPP students who:
i. excel in the ZPP and
ii. demonstrate a strong performance on the MCAT Exam

will be highly considered for direct matriculation to the Zucker School of Medicine.

There is no application fee for this program. Admitted students will receive a $1,750.00 yearly stipend. Housing accommodations and one-round trip fare will be provided for out of state students.

AAMC Fee Assistance Program

Applying to medical schools this summer? The application process can be costly, but the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) provides a generous Fee Assistance Program to those who meet its income guidelines. Applicants who are approved for FAP can receive up to $2000 in assistance for MCAT registration fees and prep materials as well as medical school application fees. PrIMER Info Session This Wednesday!

The Program to Inspire Minority Undergraduates in Environmental Health Science Research (PrIMER) is a research program for full-time, undergraduate underrepresented minority and underserved students who are typically underrepresented in STEM fields. PrIMER is funded by the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences and provides research trainees the opportunity to gain valuable research experience in environmental health sciences. Students from local NYC schools are eligible to participate. Previous trainees in the program have come from Colleges and Universities in the New York City area.

PrIMER trainees commit to a two-year program beginning June before their junior year through December of their senior year. Trainees are paired with a Columbia University faculty member who serves as a research and academic mentor throughout the program. Trainees conduct laboratory research in environmental health sciences, attend weekly professional development workshops, and interact closely with Columbia University faculty. Each fall, trainees present their summer research experience at the PrIMER Research Symposium that takes place during our departmental seminar, and is attended by faculty, students, and research staff. Trainees work with their mentor to continue research during the academic year.

Job Opportunity: Eating Disorders Research at McLean Hospital

RESEARCH ASSISTANT POSITION (FULL-TIME): Dr. Kristin Javaras is seeking a highly motivated and professional college graduate for a providing support for clinical research studies in the areas of eating disorders and general eating behavior. Studies include: (1) a federally-funded neuroimaging study in young adult women with and without binge-eating disorder; (2) a study examining the feasibility of using wearable technology to assess eating behavior in the real world in young adult women; and (3) studies examining predictors of outcomes after eating disorder treatment. This position may also involve support for other studies or projects related to the Principal Investigator’s research program. Specific responsibilities will include: performing literature searches; managing participant recruitment, screening, and tracking; assisting with participant assessment, task administration, imaging scans, and other physiological measurement; maintaining and updating data generated by the studies; performing data processing and basic data analysis; contributing to the writing of manuscripts and grant applications; and handling administrative tasks. This position offers an excellent opportunity for recent college graduates looking for clinical research experience before applying to doctoral programs (particularly in the areas of clinical, counseling, and health psychology, or neuropsychology) or medical school.

McLean Hospital (Belmont, MA) is a psychiatric affiliate of Harvard Medical School. 

QUALIFICATIONS: BA or BS Degree.  Must have at least one year of related clinical research experience (which can include undergraduate research experience). Must have demonstrated competence in research techniques and methodologies, strong writing skills, and an ability to work independently. Prior coursework in psychology, neuroscience, or related subjects preferred. Prior experience with neuroimaging also preferred.

TENTATIVE START DATE: First available start date is February 24, 2020
