Job Opportunity: Research Technician at Columbia Lab

The Synthetic Regeneration and Systems Physiology Laboratory at Columbia University is seeking a motivated mouse Research Technician to work in mouse genomics of wound healing. The Mouse Research Technician will support research studying the role of various cell groups, including immune cells, in mouse wound healing and regeneration. Laboratory experience in molecular biology, mouse breeding, and genotyping is strongly preferred. We have developed several innovative, unpublished platforms to understand tissue regeneration at organ scale. The candidate will work in close collaboration with the Columbia Stem Cell Initiative, the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the Columbia Genome Center. Responsibilities will include:

1. Mouse breeding and maintenance

2. Mouse surgery assistance

3. Operate industrial washers and autoclaves: load, run, monitor, and record sterilization cycles; ensure proper pH balance

4. Inspect glassware and lab equipment for cleanliness and damage; discard or repair items as needed.

5. Pre-soak, scrub, rinse, dry, and polish glassware manually when required; assemble/disassemble setups for cleaning.

6. Maintain cleanliness and organization of glassware washing and sterilization areas. Ensure all work surfaces, sinks, racks, trays are kept sanitized.

7. Document usage of supplies and detergents; restock cleaning agents, autoclave tape, filters, etc.

8. Support laboratory operations by tracking ordering, logging orders and storing the in their respective spaces in the lab; including mail and other delivered items.

9. Perform routine maintenance of washers, autoclaves, and related equipment: cleaning filters, checking gaskets, lubricating parts; report malfunctions.

10. Follow safety protocols: proper use of PPE (gloves, eye protection, lab coat), handling chemicals, biologicals, or hazardous materials; dispose of waste properly.

Our group uses magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to discover biomarkers for many different types of cancers and diseases, including prostate cancer, lung cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease. Our projects include nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis of biofluid samples (blood, urine, etc.) and MRI of tissue samples from patients and animals, with the goal of developing less- or non-invasive diagnostic tools for clinical implementation.

The Longman laboratory is seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented and responsible team player to serve as a Research Technician. The primary focus of our lab is the regulation of the intestinal immune system by the microbiota and how we can understand these connections to improve intestinal disease.

The Technician will work with closely with post-doctoral fellows and graduate students in an exciting academic environment studying mucosal immunology and microbiome science using both mouse models and human samples.

The Technician will help to maintain the mouse colony, work closely with fellows and students to perform experiments, partner with the Live Cell Bank to process human intestinal samples, and support general lab maintenance.

Principal Responsibilities Include: Working with graduate students and post-doc to perform immune cells analysis in various models including flow cytometry and microscopy. Molecular biology including DNA and RNA isolation for sequence analysis. Basic microbiology and sterile cell culture. Performing basic mouse husbandry, such as setting up mating cages, pup checks, weaning mouse pups, ear tagging, isolating genomic DNA and running PCR for genotyping, maintaining accurate records of animal breeding, health, weaning etc using electronic mouse colony management software. Job Opportunity: Genetic Counselor Assistant, Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York

Description:  

The Division of Medical Genetics is looking to bring on 2 strong candidates to support its genetic counseling team as Genetic Counselor Assistants.  These positions are full-time, salaried positions with benefits.  The genetic counselor assistant will be embedded in an active academic clinical division (both inpatient and outpatient responsibilities) and will be involved in patient care and translational research. 

 

Responsibilities/Functions:

 

• Obtain and document family history information, and as appropriate, generate patient pedigrees in pedigree-making software.
• Enter relevant patient data into EMR systems.
• Assist with patient chart review and case preparation for genetics patients (i.e. ensuring required medical records are obtained and managed).
• Assist with coordinating genetic testing for patients and family members, including sample collection and preparing test requisitions.
• Research genetic testing labs and coordinate insurance coverage for genetic testing.
• Disclose negative genetic test results, as requested by genetic counselor.
• Communicate with genetic counselors, team members, laboratory, and insurance personnel in an effective and timely manner.
• Prepare letters of medical necessity for genetic testing.
• Perform prior authorization requests for genetic testing, as needed.
• Triage, track referral, and assist with scheduling team by evaluating personal and family history information.
• Answer telephone, manage voicemail, schedule appointments, and communicate with patients and clinicians.
• Assist patients with utilization of telehealth services.

The Seaver Autism Center leads a progressive research program while providing comprehensive, personalized care to children, adolescents and adults with neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder and related genetic syndromes. Our multidisciplinary team of preclinical and clinical faculty seek to identify the causes of autism and advance effective treatments.
