Job Opportunity: Research Coordinator, Neurology, NYU Langone

 Position Summary:

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Research Coordinator – Neurology-Headache.

In this role, the successful candidate is responsible for providing basic to moderate range of coordination for Research studies conducted at the Medical Center. Assists with recruitment, enrollment, grant submissions, research data collection and study coordination. Performs intra-operative monitoring and serves as liaison with the IRB and the internal and external funding agencies. Ensures accurate execution of research protocols in accordance with Good Clinical Practices, HIPAA and required obligations to patient/subject, Principal Investigator, research team and sponsor. Interfaces directly with patients/subjects and Principal Investigators in support of the clinical trials if applicable. Works under general supervision.


Job Responsibilities:

    • Human Subjects’ Research – If applicable, updates and submits necessary documents required by the NYU Institutional Board (IRB), NYU Office of Clinical Trials and any other appropriate parties in order to obtain approval to conduct human subjects research. Secures accurate signatures and forwards documents and/or forms to appropriate destination. Might prepare and submit monthly enrollment statistics to the Office of Clinical Trials and provide other information in timely manner, as necessary.
    • Participates in special projects and performs other duties as required.
    • Budgets – May develop draft budgets and submit to the Principal Investigator. Assists in the preparation of funding reports to agencies. Helps to identify new potential sponsors/agents for trials and researches as assigned.
    • Grants – Assists in the preparation of grant applications and related activities such as developing grants proposals and fund raising activities. Collects and organizes required paperwork for submission if required. Follows up and coordinates resolution of all issues progress reports to the sponsors to fund medical research in the division.
    • Reporting and Analysis – Gathers and compiles data and assists in consolidating/analyzing data for presentation to sponsoring and regulatory agencies. Provides reports to all necessary parties (e.g., the principal investigator, sponsoring agency, etc.) on the progress of the study as needed. Conduct primary analysis to data collected. Formulates, prepares database and generates preliminary measurement reports for review by the PI.
    • Continuous Learning: Position requires ongoing continuing education in all areas of research development. It is expected that the employee demonstrates proof of ongoing research education on a yearly basis. Training programs are provided through the SOM.
    • Clinical Competency: Position may require competency in performing EKG, phlebotomy technique, centrifuge, handling, storing and shipping of specimens. Clinical training and didactic competency tests may be required to perform basic procedures as part of position expectations. In house training and certification will be provided. Other trainings and competencies may be included as required.
    • Recruitment – Screens potential patients/subjects for eligibility to the study and schedules the initial visits. This may include researching and gathering information from the medical record, physician referral, advertisement and directly scheduling a visit to evaluate the patient/subject. Reviews all the elements of the screening process with the Principal Investigator that include but not limited to: inclusion/exclusion criteria, completed informed consent, documentation of the event and the patient/subject willingness to participate in the study.
    • Research Activities – Collects patient information for the research project(s). This may include abstraction of data from the patient chart (e.g., laboratory or diagnostic test results, surgical/radiation treatments delivered, adverse drug reactions, etc); abstraction of data for publications, or data collection from outside physicians offices. Uses tools to facilitate data collection (e.g. calendars, schedules, tracking logs, etc). Audits and updates the database or the case report forms. Conducts study visits, obtains and documents information within the time frame specified. Research, collects, compiles and conducts preliminary analyses of data, statistics, and other materials for reports. Conduct preliminary analysis.
    • Study Regulations – Aware of study regulatory status and keeps an up to date copy of regulatory documents. Assists with the informed consent process and ensure that the patient/subject fully understands what is required of them throughout the study. Follows through regularly with the patient/subjects and reminds them of visits and compliance.

Feil Family BMRI Neuroscience Summer Diversity Scholars Program

The Feil Family Brain and Mind Research Institute at Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM) is pleased to announce the BMRI Summer Diversity Scholar Program. The BMRI Summer Scholar is a new opportunity for promising young scientists residing in the New York City area and provides awardees a 8-week long paid internship at a world-renowned research facility with leaders in neurodegeneration research. Individuals will receive one-on-one training with a researcher in one of the BMRI/Neuroscience Graduate Program laboratories, develop a research idea and plan, learn scientific methods, and produce their own data. They will also be included in workshops and seminars sponsored by WCM’s Office of Diversity. At the end of the internship, BMRI diversity scholars will present their findings in a research seminar.

Our 2024 program will be held from June 3rd to August 2nd, 2024. While we are excited to welcome students to campus next summer, the safety and security of the WCM community is our highest priority. Therefore, we may need to adjust to a virtual format due to COVID-19 to adhere to state and federal guidelines. Applicants will be notified to any changes to the program’s format via email.

Requirements:

  • Applicants should be currently pursuing a college-level degree. A science-related major (e.g. biology, chemistry, math, engineering, etc.) is not required; non-science majors should discuss their science-related interests in their personal statement.
  • Commitment to a 8-week long, summer internship in one of the BMRI labs. See faculty list here.
  • Identify as coming from an underrepresented background (Underrepresented racial/ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities, and/or individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, as defined by NIH guidelines.

Job Opportunity: Research Staff Assistant, Zuckerman Institute Lomvardas Lab

The Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute at Columbia University brings together researchers from different scientific disciplines to transform our understanding of the mind and brain. In this highly interactive research environment, laboratories work together to gain critical insights into human health by exploring how the brain develops, performs, endures, and recovers. The Zuckerman Institute is housed in the Jerome L. Greene Science Center, an architectural masterpiece on Columbia University’s new Manhattanville campus.

The Lomvardas lab at Zuckerman Institute is seeking a full-time research technician that will assist a postdoctoral fellow with projects related to the expression of mouse olfactory receptors and the culturing of mouse olfactory neurons. Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Perform molecular biology techniques, dissections, tissue sectioning, and immunohistochemistry, directed by the PI and Senior Researchers.
  • Maintenance of mouse colony.
  • Work collaboratively with graduate students, other research assistants as well as post-docs and MDs in keeping careful records of the work performed during experiments, communicate well, and present to the group.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must have a science-related Bachelor’s degree. A minimum of six (6) months of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Prior research laboratory experience is highly desired, including work with rodent models.
Experience with molecular biology, tissue culture, and/or mouse colony management is preferred.
Lab experience is preferred but a post-baccalaureate candidate building skills prior to medical or graduate school might find this position productive and rewarding. Proficiency with programming and electronics is a plus. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills are essential.

Job Opportunity: Research Assistant, CUMC

 Part time (15 hours/week) research assistant for a multicenter epilepsy genetics study.

Responsibilities

The project coordinator will work under Dr. Winawer’s supervision. S(he)/they will screen epilepsy patient medical records and surgical schedules to identify potentially eligible patients, He/she/they will be responsible for contacting potential participants via IRB approved protocols to obtain consent and explain the nature of the project prior to surgery. The coordinator will coordinate timing of tissue collection from scheduled surgeries at CUMC. He/she/they will track brain tissue samples from participating sites for sequencing analyses. He/she/they will coordinate research imaging for CUMC participants and provision of images from all participating sites. The coordinator will create and maintain study databases and provide weekly reports and summaries to Dr. Winawer.


Preferred Qualifications

Human subjects research experience. 

Experience with databases.

 Morishita lab (http://www.morishita-lab.com/) has an opening for a full-time research assistant position to participate in the studies of cortical mechanisms of cognitive behavior relevant to psychiatric disorders. We use mouse models and take an integrated approach, combining molecular, anatomical, electrophysiological, and behavior methodologies.

This position provides an opportunity to gain significant research in an interdisciplinary lab environment, as well as to contribute to papers. The position focuses on rodent behavioral study of cognitive circuits relevant to neurodevelopmental disorders. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: conducting touchscreen based cognitive testings, data analysis, histologist characterization, and exposure to advanced circuit manipulations and measurements. Job Opportunity: Clinical Research Assistant, Boston University Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Center

We are seeking a talented individual to serve as a Clinical Research Assistant for the Boston University (BU) Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) Center at the National Coordinating Center for the DIAGNOSE CTE Research Project. The DIAGNOSE CTE Research Project is an NIH-
funded, 7-year, multi-center, multidisciplinary, longitudinal clinical research study of CTE. The primary goals of the project are to: develop methods of diagnosing the neurodegenerative disease, CTE, during life, refine and validate diagnostic criteria for the clinical diagnosis of CTE, and investigate genetic and head impact exposure risk factors for CTE. The National Coordinating Center is located within the BU CTE Center at BU School of Medicine. All baseline evaluations (on former NFL players, former collegiate football players, and men with no contact sport or military history) are complete, with follow-up evaluations currently being conducted remotely.

Responsibilities:
• Coordinate and conduct remote study evaluations, including consenting and determining decisional capacity
• Administer and score telephone- and video-based neuropsychological tests and other assessments
• Schedule in-home phlebotomy appointments and shipping of blood samples
• Work with Retention Coordinator on a variety of activities

Qualifications:
• Bachelors’ degree (or equivalent) in Psychology/Neuropsychology, Neuroscience, Public Health, Sports Medicine, Pre-Med track, or related field
• Exceptional organizational, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills

Job Opportunity: Clinical Research Coordinator, Boston Children’s Hospital Department of Neurology

Position: Clinical Research Coordinator at Boston Children’s Hospital Department of Neurology
Start Date: Immediate -June 2022, 2-year commitment requested, exceptional candidates may be considered for 1-year

Program Description: This clinical research program aims to describe and develop ways to reduce neurologic sequalae of complex medical conditions with a focus on congenital heart disease, extreme prematurity, and COVID-19, including multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). The Fetal Heart and Brain Project is an NIH-funded clinical research study examining fetal brain development and neurodevelopmental outcomes in children born with heart defects, using MRI and neuropsychological evaluation measures. This study affords the opportunity to work with an interdisciplinary team of neurologists, neuropsychologists, cardiologists and MRI physicists. The ELGAN-ECHO Study is a multi-site project that examines long-term neurodevelopment and medical outcomes of Extremely Low Gestational Age Newborns (ELGANs). This project is the third phase of a longitudinal study of adolescents previously evaluated at birth, two years, ten years, and fifteen years. In addition to neurobehavioral measures, the coordinator will have exposure to broader pediatric clinical and epidemiologic research through participation in the ECHO consortium.

Job Description: This position is intended for a college graduate or masters level individual interested in pursuing a career in medicine, psychology, or related fields. In addition, experienced clinical research coordinators interested in a long-term role are encouraged to apply. The position offers the opportunity to gain experience in clinical research and work closely with clinicians, child and adolescent participants, pregnant women, and families. Teamwork with clinicians and researchers in a wide variety of medical specialties is central to this role. The successful applicant will have very strong interpersonal skills, be highly organized and detail oriented, and be an independent problem solver.

The clinical research coordinator will manage all day-to-day study operations including frequent contact with participants for recruitment, retention, and cohort maintenance (e.g., conducting frequent phone calls and mailings). The coordinator will work with the principal investigator and investigators and staff at other sites. Responsibilities include screening for eligible participants, recruiting/consenting participants, scheduling and attending study visits, administering patient questionnaires, maintaining study databases, and performing medical record and literature reviews. Opportunities for publication and preparation for interested coordinators.

Collaboration between studies: Applicants will have a primary project but be expected to become trained and well versed on multiple projects working collaboratively as a team. This position will require excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Other Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree (ideally in neuroscience or a related field)
  • Prior clinical research experience strongly preferred
  • Fluency in Spanish will be helpful
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and comfort talking to patients in challenging circumstances
  • Excellent non-verbal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Highly organized and able to multi-task
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to meet strict deadlines
  • Able to work well in a group and individually
  • Full time, 40 hours per week
  • Work hours are generally 8:30 am – 5 pm but must have flexibility to accommodate patient schedules for evening and weekend study visits.

Job Opportunity: Postbac Researcher, UNC Chapel Hill

We are seeking up to 2 post-baccalaureate researchers in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at UNC Chapel Hill to join the WiFI initiative (www.wifi-initiative.org) studying the role of technology and social media on adolescent development. We specifically are looking for BA-level researchers with skills in recruitment, screening, and data collection with adolescent participants and their families who wishes to gain more experience in research for graduate school. The researcher would work on a unique dataset that combines theories and methods in developmental psychology (longitudinal fMRI data), social psychology (emotional processing, social interactions), and health behaviors (health risk behaviors, internalizing and externalizing disorders). Experience with fMRI acquisition, managing and processing fMRI data, computer science and coding, experience with social or developmental neuroscience methods, and an interest in adolescent interpersonal experiences, psychological symptoms, emotion, or risk behaviors is a plus. Our mission is to make neuroscience accessible for everyone, and we are looking for a diversity of contributing voices in the pursuit of upholding our pillars of Universality, Accessibility, and Mentorship. A full-time Research Assistant is being sought to support multiple NIH-funded projects in the labs of Dr. Pearl Chiu and Dr. Brooks King-Casas (https://fbri.vtc.vt.edu/research/labs) at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at Virginia Tech Carilion in Roanoke, Virginia. Projects in the labs are highly interdisciplinary and combine methods from experimental and clinical psychology, neuroscience, and behavioral economics with functional neuroimaging and in vivo electrochemistry to investigate brain function in healthy and psychiatric populations. Current projects include both cross-sectional and interventional studies with a focus on major depressive disorder, borderline personality disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, substance-use disorders and at-risk youth. Job Opportunity: Research Associate, Cognition in Essential Tremor UT Southwestern Medical Center

 Dr. Elan D. Louis, the chair of the Department of Neurology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, is interested in hiring one full-time paid research associate (RA) who will be involved in the study of Cognition in Essential Tremor (COGNET) to start in May 2021 This study is attempting to understand the connection between and progression of cognitive decline in Essential Tremor (ET) (i.e.: Essential Tremor and Parkinson's Disease).

The RA will travel within the US to conduct in-person visits (or remotely via Zoom), which include neuro-psychological testing and videotaped neurological examinations. The RA will learn about aspects of clinical research from study design to data collection and publication, how to recognize a range of involuntary movements, and is strongly encouraged to conduct independent research. This program offers an integrated paid ten-week summer research experience for eight (non-Penn) students that combines the opportunity to work on a research project in an established lab at an R1 university with an introductory workshop on brains and behavior and ongoing programming to support student development and well-being.

This program aims to attract and support students from diverse backgrounds to the field of cognitive science. Under the supervision of faculty and program staff, students participate in:

  • 1 week introductory workshop on interdisciplinary research in cognitive science
  • 9 weeks of mentored research experience
  • research ethics training
  • technical training
  • lab tours
  • professional development opportunities with the aim to prepare participants for pursuing advanced education and careers in related fields of research.
  • Guidance toward creating a final poster or presentation of the student’s summer research work

Columbia Synapse Panel Event: The Resilient Brain, Current Research Landscape

 Columbia Synapse's annual research panel ("The Resilient Brain: Current Research Landscape") will be hosted on November 7th at 3 PM EST! Expert neuroscience and clinical researchers will be discussing current research and treatment of traumatic brain injury (TBI). All individuals interested in learning about the cutting-edge developments in TBI research are highly encouraged to attend! This will be a great opportunity to learn more about the brain and clinical treatments for TBIs, as well as the surrounding support networks for individuals with TBIs.

Amanda L. Sacks-Zimmerman, Ph.D., ABPP-CN, is a board-certified clinical neuropsychologist who has had extensive experience in assessing and treating neurological disorders with cognitive remediation as well as researching the cognitive impact of brain injury. She treats a variety of patients who suffer from cognitive and emotional difficulties that may be the result of epilepsy; radiation or chemotherapy; cardiopulmonary bypass procedures; surgery; cerebrovascular disease; stroke; silent infarcts; brain tumor resection; movement disorders such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and Huntington’s disease; metabolic disorders; infectious processes such as encephalitis or Lyme disease; chemical toxin exposure; traumatic brain injury; and dementia diagnoses including mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer’s disease, multi-infarct dementia, and frontal temporal dementia.


Dr. Koliatsos, Professor of Pathology and Neurology and Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, is the head of the Laboratory. Dr. Koliatsos trained in systems neuroscience with Mahlon DeLong and cellular and molecular neuropathology with Don Price. His main interest is mechanisms of neural injury and repair relevant to human disease. He has previously characterized a number of neurotrophic factors for key populations of neurons in the brain and spinal cord and initiated experimental therapies of spinal cord diseases with stem cells and their progenies. In recent years, Dr. Koliatsos has turned to the problem of traumatic brain injury, both as morbidity in and of itself and as model for neurodegenerative disorders. He serves on the faculty of the Ph.D. graduate program of Pathobiology of Disease and leads the TBI Research Center in the Department of Pathology. A clinical neuropsychiatrist, he also sees patients with TBI and degenerative dementias. Dr. Koliatsos has received a Leadership and Excellence in Alzheimer’s disease Award and the Javits Neuroscience Investigator Award from NIH and a 2018 Discovery Award from Johns Hopkins University.


Dr. Peter Bergold received his B.S.in Biology from Trinity College in 1977 and his PhD in Molecular Biology from Cornell Medical College in 1986.  He did a post-doctoral fellowship in Neuroscience with Dr. James Schwartz at the Howard Hughes Institute at Columbia University.  He joined the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology of Downstate in 1990 as an Assistant Professor and became a Professor of Physiology, Pharmacology and Neurology in 2009.  His research interest in the last ten years has focused on traumatic brain injury.  A major research focus of his laboratory has been the development of drug combinations to treat brain injury.

Founded in early 2019 as the New York City chapter of Synapse National, we are dedicated to curating a diverse portfolio of programs that serve the community of individuals with brain injuries and other invisible disabilities. As organizers and leaders, we have successfully built a robust network in New York City and syndicated with doctors and researchers in the NYU Langone, Columbia University Medical Center, Weill Cornell, and Mount Sinai hospital networks. Job Description

A vibrant and collaborative scientific group studies numerous aspects of neurological disease etiology and pathogenesis. These studies follow a number of longitudinal cohorts of neurological patients, on whom exquisite phenotypic and biomarker data are collected, yielding large data sets that are ripe for analysis and preparation of manuscripts for peer-submission.
This individual will spearhead data analysis and paper writing efforts from these data sets. 
 

Job Duties
Perform qualitative interviews and/or administer quantitative surveys to research participants. 
Prepares protocols and detailed summaries for multiple research studies. 
Apply advanced knowledge of research methodology and techniques to develop more complex survey instruments; evaluate methodologies and tools and suggest modifications for improvement. 
Perform a variety of complex and independent activities involved in the analysis and interpretation of results and the preparation of manuscripts for publication. 
Contribute to reports, papers and other publications; prepare tables and graphs for publication and presentation. 
Assist in developing and submitting grant proposals. 
Supervise data collectors and data analysts. 
Performs other duties as assigned.
