Event: University of Pittsburgh’s Physician Scientist Training Program Info Session

The University of Pittsburgh’s Physician Scientist Training Program (PSTP) is a unique 5-year MD program with an emphasis on research. We would love to invite pre-medical students to a PSTP Zoom presentations on Friday, April 2nd at 4 pm ET. 

A little more info about the PSTP: we are a 5-year medical school program designed to prepare students for careers as physician-scientists. The PSTP provides students with extensive exposure to basic science research, and we take great care to pair students with individualized research mentors. The most unique component of the PSTP is that each student participates in a fully funded, 1-year research project with the mentor of their choice. Opportunity: Research Volunteer in Gene Regulation and Noncoding RNA, Weill Cornell Medicine

Are you a naturally curious about biology and interested in gaining research experience? We are looking for kind, enthusiastic individuals to join our nascent research lab and help make discoveries about enigmatic RNAs that do not code for protein. We use molecular and computational biology, cell culture, and mouse models to make fundamental insights about gene regulation. To learn more, please visit: https://kleavelandlab.org.

This is a full-time (35 hrs/wk) summer position with the possibility of continuing part-time during the school year. You will be assisting a research technician and/or postdoctoral fellow with their projects. Opportunities for independent projects will be considered as your skills progress. The percentage of time spent working remotely versus in-person has yet to be determined.

Our ideal candidate:

  • Is currently a freshman or sophomore majoring in a STEM field
  • Has a strong work ethic and good communication skills
  • Is organized, efficient, and accurate
  • Enjoys problem solving and working in a creative and collaborative environment
  • Has some fluency in Python or R

Gerald E. Thomson Undergraduate Pre-medical Program

Commonly referred to as GET-UPP, the Gerald E. Thomson Undergraduate Pre-medical Program is a free pre-med mentorship program designed to supplement students’ academic trajectory as they pursue medical school admission. The program provides participants with opportunities to network with professionals in medical education and healthcare through mentorship sessions, lectures with clinical faculty, virtual shadowing activities, and medical school admissions representatives. The GET-UPP Program serves up to 50 pre-medical students from Columbia College, Barnard College, and undergraduate programs at the City Universities of New York.

Program activities for the 2021-2022 academic year will commence in late September. All 2020-2021 program activities have been hosted remotely and the program will continue in an all-virtual format until in-person activity is deemed feasible by university guidance.

Event: University of Connecticut 4th Annual Global Health Symposium

The symposium, which is 100% student organized and run, was created in 2018 with the goal of establishing an open forum for discussing issues related to the health of individuals around the world

The theme for this year’s Symposium is: Decolonizing Global Health. We will be focusing on the impact of colonialism, how it manifests itself in current local and global health disparities, and amplifying the voices of communities we seek to serve. This event will be held virtually this year, from Friday, March 26th through Sunday, March 28th. As part of this symposium, we will be featuring keynote speakers as well as a panel of international professionals who advocate for and are integral to their community's health. This will include professionals from Asia, Africa, and Latin America, as well as a professional extensively involved in the health of Native American communities in the US. This will give students the opportunity to meet and connect with experts and gain new cultural perspectives as well.

Job Opportunity: Research Associate, Cognition in Essential Tremor UT Southwestern Medical Center

 Dr. Elan D. Louis, the chair of the Department of Neurology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, is interested in hiring one full-time paid research associate (RA) who will be involved in the study of Cognition in Essential Tremor (COGNET) to start in May 2021 This study is attempting to understand the connection between and progression of cognitive decline in Essential Tremor (ET) (i.e.: Essential Tremor and Parkinson's Disease).

The RA will travel within the US to conduct in-person visits (or remotely via Zoom), which include neuro-psychological testing and videotaped neurological examinations. The RA will learn about aspects of clinical research from study design to data collection and publication, how to recognize a range of involuntary movements, and is strongly encouraged to conduct independent research. B.A./B.S. degree, driver’s license, are required, and experience working with elderly individuals/vulnerable populations is preferred. Candidates must be able to commit 2 years to the position.     COVID-19 Education Empowerment Program

    The COVID-19 Community Education Empowerment Program, a collaboration of New York City medical schools, will recruit underrepresented in medicine, first generation, and disadvantaged college and gap year students interested in medical and health careers to learn about COVID-19 and disparities, vaccine science, the roles of medicine and public health, and strategies for community education and empowerment.
