NYU Winthrop Hospital Radiation Oncology Research Internship
NYU Winthrop Hospital’s Radiation Oncology Department is offering an exciting opportunity
to students who are interested in gaining research experience in the medical field. Over the
years our department has provided excellent care to a vast amount of patients enabling us to
contribute to research and publish in multiple impactful journals. Currently, our department is
looking to expand on one of our existing databases, with a primary focus on prostate cancer.
Our research team is looking to onboard a group of students, whose research experience levels
vary from beginner to advanced. Students will have the opportunity to observe how data is
collected through patient charts (paper and electronic records) and transferred into our databases.
With the instruction from the Research Coordinator and the Database Manager, students will learn
to perform data collection and data management independently. Depending on the student’s
experience level and motivation, they will be also able to partake in data analysis and abstract
writing portions of existing and new research projects. Ideal students will bring with them some
research experience (lab work, course work, previous internships), however this is not a
requirement. We are happy to consider students who are ready to tackle our data using
SPSS/R/Python as much as students who will be assisting us with data entry. While we believe
that students who are in a Pre-Med track would benefit most from this opportunity, we will
accept students from all science backgrounds. In addition to being an innovative field that
employs cutting-edge medical technology to treatments, Radiation Oncology also has a major
physics component (dosimetry). Hence, students concentrating on math/statistics, social science
(with research emphasis), computer science, biology/chemistry/physics would benefit
immensely from this experience.
Students interested in this exciting opportunity should submit a resume and a letter of interest
stating why they would be a good candidate for this opportunity to gizem.demircioglu@nyulangone.org. Students will report directly to Gizem Demircioglu, the Research Coordinator overseeing the projects and will have the option to work from 2 sites: Mineola, Long Island and Upper West Side, New York City. Students will have the unique opportunity of observing a busy radiation oncology clinic, and shadowing physicians, radiation therapists, nurses, physicists and other staff, as the team’s schedule allows. A letter of recommendation will be provided to students, who successfully complete the internship.
Requirements:
- Rising Junior or Senior college student, med student or graduate student
- Has GPA > 3.0
- Has a flexible schedule, and is responsible and punctual
- Can work in a team, as well as independently
- Motivated, and passionate about research and/or medicine
- Successfully interviews with key members of our staff for the position
- Devotes 4-5 hours/day, 2-3 days/week, for 8-weeks, over the course of summer 2019
(mid June – mid August)
Students who start out as summer interns and may move on to volunteering part time in fall/winter, in combination with their school work, and extend work on their summer research projects
Responsibilities (depending on the experience level):
- Data entry and data management (Excel, Access, SQL)
- Data analysis (Excel,SPSS/R/Python/Matlab)
- Scientific writing (Abstract & Manuscript writing)
- Active participation in Journal Club (reading, discussing and critiquing journal articles)
- Observing and assisting with Research Protocol preparation and submission
- Work closely with the Research Coordinator and the Data Manager on site.
Please feel free to contact Gizem Demircioglu directly at gizem.demircioglu@nyulangone.org.

Employment Opportunity: College Advising Corps at NYU
The College Advising Corps (CAC) at New York University is a full-time program that seeks to increase the number of first-generation college-bound, low-to-moderate income, and underrepresented high school and community college students who enter and persist in college and earn bachelor’s degrees.
The CAC achieves this mission by placing near-peer, recent college graduates to serve as full-time College Advisers in under-served schools across New York City. College Advisers provide college application and financial aid guidance to students and their families while fostering a culture of college attendance and higher education.
Currently, NYU CAC serves 66 NYC high schools across four boroughs with the exciting anticipation that we will be in 100 schools by the start of the 2019-2020 academic school year. To learn more, please visit our website at: www.advisingcorps.org
We are currently looking and hiring for young and enthusiastic advisers. Specifically, we are trying to meet candidates who are on pre-professional paths who are looking to take a gap year to study for the LSAT, MCAT, GRE, etc. and offer them an employment opportunity that has a diverse and lush range of directly transferable skills to their future career paths. Why our program?
- Our advisers are eligible for tuition remission at NYU
- We provide career and graduate school guidance for our advisers during their time of service
- They will be full-time NYU employees with salary, benefits, and a flexible work schedule that allows them to apply to grad school, job search, and explore the next step in their careers or academic pursuits
- An extensive, national network of College Advising Corps Alumni across the entire country, working in a diverse array of different career fields
Interested applicants may either apply directly by sending a cover letter or resume to Pat Kim (jk166@nyu.edu), or we are more than happy to offer an informational phone call/answer any email questions that prospective applicants may have.
