STEM Thesis Drop-In Hours

Barnard's Science Fellows and Speaking Fellows are excited to announce drop-in hours for those working on STEM theses. You can receive help with both writing and oral presentation components of your thesis work, and are welcome to drop in at any of the following:

Doctors Without Borders Internship

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF-USA) is pleased to announce its paid Internship Program. Interns gain practical work experience and support the work of the Communications, Development, Program, Human Resources (both for the field and the office), and Executive departments. Interns also gain a basic introduction to the field of international medical humanitarian aid and advocacy. All internships will take place in the New York office and will be paid at the rate of $15.00 per hour.

The Midlevel Giving Program Internship is ideal for someone who is curious about a career in fundraising and/or wants to gain experience in marketing. They’ll gain true insights on what it takes to manage a personalized, omnichannel program with a portfolio of 70,000 donors with this internship!

Neuroscience Department Feedback Meeting, 4/8

The Neuroscience Department invites you to attend a meeting on Monday, April 8th at 5 PM to provide feedback and help us figure out what improvements can be made in the new academic year to better serve our students.

Gap Year Position: Research Trainee, Global Diabetes Institute

Position Description: Dr. Meredith Hawkins, Professor of Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Director of the Einstein Global Diabetes Institute, is currently seeking a new research trainee to begin in the early summer (mid May or early June). For the past several years this role has been occupied by pre-medical students who have all successfully matriculated to medical school. Dr. Hawkins would like to again hire a highly qualified pre-health or allied health student who is taking either one or two years off before attending medical or graduate school.
The research trainee will play a vital role in the development of current and new research protocols. The ideal candidate should have a strong research background, work well with others, and be a highly motivated self-starter. This is a full-time (Monday through Friday, 9AM-5PM) paid position. The research trainee will work very closely with the research team and will gain valuable insight into how clinical research is conducted. They will also gain a strong understanding of the biology and medicine behind the research. Moreover, this individual will have an important role in organizing and supporting multiple functions of the Global Diabetes Institute, from working on diabetes-related clinical science research projects, to maintaining effective communication with collaborating investigators in the US and globally. Dr. Hawkins is currently collaborating with researchers and health workers abroad in both India and Uganda. For the past several years this role has been occupied by pre-medical students who have all successfully matriculated to medical school.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist with recruitment of research participants for clinical research trials and activities related to diabetes
  • Assist with writing research documents including presentations, manuscripts, grant proposals, and journal articles
  • Conduct data analysis for existing research studies
  • Keep study specifics and methods up to date for each research protocol
  • Support Global Diabetes Institute team members in developing programs (including scheduling, travel, expenses, fund-raising) 
Skills:
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • Effective time and resource management
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Develops effective relationships with research participants, faculty, and staff
  • Significant experience with Microsoft Office Word and Excel, as well as reference software (e.g., EndNote, RefWorks, etc.)
Qualifications:
  • Minimum: Bachelor’s degree
  • Highly qualified pre-med/pre-health candidates are welcomed and preferred
  • Available to begin in mid May/early June
  • Prior research experience required
  • Interest in healthcare and science
  • Interest in patient education in both local and global communities preferred
  • 1 or 2-year commitment preferred, but negotiable. Open to extension.

Attention first and second year students: the Neuroscience Help Room offers free tutoring resources for Barnard students. Students who would like help with any Neuroscience-related coursework (including pre-reqs) are welcome to attend. Course Description:
The premise of this course is that we cannot understand topics of health and illness by only looking at biological phenomena, but instead we must consider a variety of social, political, economic, and cultural forces. Medical sociologists use sociological perspectives and methods to understand topics such as: unequal patterns in health and illness; how people make sense of their illness; doctor-patient interactions; changes in the medical profession, health policies and institutions; social movements around health; and how some behaviors but not others are understood as medical problems. This course is designed to provide a broad overview of medical sociology and will serve as an important introduction to the field for students interested in medicine, health and society.
