Barnard welcomes back Dr. Nieca Goldberg '79, a pioneer in women's heart health for the Being the First series. Being the First showcases trailblazers and those who were "the first" in their field. Goldberg graduated from Barnard College and received her medical degree from SUNY Downstate Medical Center. Author of the award-winning book The Women's Healthy Heart ProgramGoldberg is the medical director of the Joan H. Tisch Center for Women's Health at NYU Langone, a national spokesperson for the American Heart Association, and she started the "Go Red for Women" campaign. Nikki Youngblood Giles, associate dean for Beyond Barnard, joins Goldberg to discuss her education at Barnard, her thoughts on research and medical care for women, the value of a STEM education, and the trajectory of her career. Summer 2019 HCC Internship

Health Career Connection (HCC) is a comprehensive professional development program that provides paid summer internships to undergraduate and recent graduates in the field of public health and healthcare.

HCC is committed to increasing representation of all racial and ethnic groups in the health professions. Students of color, first-generation students and those of economically challenged backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.

Through partnerships with local organizations, HCC provides internships in a variety of settings including but not limited to: hospitals, community health centers, medical groups, health plans, local health departments, governmental agencies, community-based organizations, and advocacy groups. During the course of the internship, students will work on meaningful projects and gain professional and personal development skills or acumen. HCC provides extensive exposure to health careers through workshops and events guiding students towards their authentic health career path.

HCC interns are passionate, committed, and dedicated to connecting with their cohort and alumni.

Program dates: May or June to August, 2019
Stipend: $3,000 - $4,000
Early decision deadline: November 26, 2018
Final deadline: December 26, 2018

Application Year Overview Sessions This Week


Cycle 2019 of Barnard’s Committee Application officially opened on October 25, 2018, and, as a reminder, this week will feature two Application Year Overview: Part I sessions for all Cycle 2019 applicants. Please plan to attend one of these sessions!

For those planning to apply to health professions schools in summer 2019, we ask that you update your intended matriculation year to 2020 in AdviseStream, if you have not already done so.

Prehealth Overview TODAY at 2:30pm

A friendly reminder to students who have not yet attended a Prehealth Overview session--your next chance to meet with a health professions advisor as well as prehealth peers is coming up this afternoon, 10/29, 2:30-3:30pm in the Beyond Barnard offices (Elliott Hall, 2nd floor)Prehealth students are expected to attend an overview session prior to scheduling individual advising appointments. Overview sessions discuss academic preparation, portfolio development, letters of recommendation, Barnard’s Committee process, and advising resources. They are intended to provide space, in a small-group setting, for questions about the prehealth experience. 

If you are interested in attending, please RSVP now, as space is limited.

CCNY Annual Volunteer Fair 10/30/18

Are you looking for a community service and/or clinical exposure activity?  Please consider attending the City  College of New York's Pre-Medical Studies 9th Annual Volunteer Fair.  There is still time to pre-register!  On hand will be 30+ community service agencies, hospitals on hand to recruit you for their various programs and projects.  This is a perfect opportunity for you to begin working on or enhancing your clinical exposure and community service activities.  Students can pre-register for the event at the link below, or register on-site the day of the event.
