Opportunity: Medical Interpreting Training at Mount Sinai St. Luke's Hospital

Happy New Year!

We are pleased to announce the Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Hospital Language Services Winter 2017 Medical Interpreting Training.

MEDICAL INTERPRETING TRAINING

As a medical interpreter you can make a difference!

The Language Services Department at Mount Sinai St. Luke's has developed a two day training program to enable participants to acquire basic interpretation skills in the medical setting. Trained volunteer interpreters assist providers to meet the health care needs of our culturally diverse patients.

A trained medical interpreter contributes to better health outcomes, better communication between provider and Limited English Proficiency (LEP) patients, increased clinician and patient satisfaction, and reduced legal risks. This program meets the requirements of the New York Department of Health and adheres to federal mandates and guidelines on cultural and linguistic appropriate health care.

The training will take place at Mount Sinai St. Luke's Hospital on Saturday, February 4 and Saturday, February 11  both days are from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Enrollment deadline is Wednesday, February 1, 2017.

Interested candidates should contact Maribel Fiol at Maribel.fiol@mountsinai.org.

Annually, the program offers interviews to 130 applicants and accepts 50 to participate in the summer. Interviews will be held two weekends in March 2017. We invite applications from mature, committed, and motivated students who fully accept the demands of Project Healthcare and have a willingness to participate enthusiastically in all aspects of the program. We encourage applications not only from students with a strong interest in healthcare (aspiring doctors, nurses, nurse-practitioners, physician assistants, clinical psychologists/psychiatrists, clinical social workers), but also from students who are uncertain about pursuing a career in healthcare. Recent college graduates are also invited to apply. Housing is not provided as part of this program.
