Barnard's Susan Scheman Ratner '86 Writing & Speaking Pedagogy Series presents Communicating Science Beyond the Ivory Tower, a lecture by Dr. Carl Hart, chair of Columbia University's Department of Psychology.

Clinical Assistant in Pediatrics Practice

Hudson Heights Pediatrics, PC, located in upper Manhattan, seeks a graduating senior or recent graduate for a full-time clinical assistant position. This is a fitting training ground for those interested in medicine, health care, or small business management. Hudson Heights Pediatrics is looking for someone interested in both clinical and managerial aspects of medicine.

The ideal candidate has:
interest in the field of healthcare
effective communication skills and is comfortable interacting both in-person and over the phone
the desire to take initiative
comfort multitasking, prioritizing, and dealing with several pressing matters at once
sensitivity to the needs of patients, visitors and coworkers
excellent organizational skills
strong teamwork skills
experience working with children

Responsibilities include:
serving as clinical and administrative staff, including taking patient vitals, assisting with vaccines, intake and checkout and other reception duties
discussing clinical cases with patients over the phone
helping to manage Dr. Richter’s schedule
managing Dr. Richter’s medical and insurance certifications
liaising with Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and maintaining other professional relationships
communicating requests to other staff members

This is a full-time position starting spring 2019 and requiring 35-40 hours per week, including one Sunday per month. Spanish language skills are a plus. We work with an amazing team of doctors led by Dr. Joseph Richter who has been affiliated with Columbia Presbyterian Hospital for 20 years and founded the practice in 2009.  Hudson Heights Pediatrics has been managed and staffed by Columbia and Barnard graduates since its opening.

CSTEP Internship Program at SUNY Optometry

Applications are currently open for two opportunities to learn more about the profession of optometry at SUNY Optometry, located in midtown Manhattan. SUNY Optometry's CSTEP Internship Program is designed to support New York state residents who identify as members of a historically underrepresented group or who come from an economically disadvantaged background.

The Spring Internship program runs from June 4 - June 14, 2019. This is an exploratory program, designed to let students shadow in clinics, visit private practices, go through professional school readiness workshops, network with students and faculty, and do a research presentation.

The Summer Academic Program meets every Tuesday between June 4 and July 30, 2019. In this academic program, students will get a chance to take introductory optometry curriculum courses with SUNY Optometry faculty, for 2 elective credits.  They also get a chance to shadow one day in the clinic.

Camp PALS Volunteer Positions

PALS Programs is a nonprofit organization that provides one week long summer camp opportunities for teens and young adults with Down syndrome and their peers at 14 college campuses across the country, including PALS NYC at Fordham University and PALS NY at Cornell. PALS is currently accepting volunteer applications for Summer 2019 programs.

PALS Programs offers immersive one-week long summer camps for teens and young adults with Down syndrome and their peers. Volunteer counselors are paired one-to-one with a roommate who has Down syndrome for a week of incredible activities and trips. Trips have included a day at the beach, yacht cruises, amusement parks, and more!

PALS provides an opportunity for future healthcare professionals to gain experience with diverse populations, develop genuine friendships, and build leadership skills. Check out this video to see why volunteers call PALS the best week of the year!

Research Assistant Positions at the Tisch MS Research Center


Research Assistant Position:
A Research Assistant position will be available at the Tisch Multiple Sclerosis Research Center of New York (Tisch MSRCNY) starting the summer of 2019. Tisch MSRCNY is an independent research center in New York City dedicated to finding the cure for MS, under the direction of Saud A. Sadiq, MD.  The Tisch MSRCNY is closely affiliated with the International Multiple Sclerosis Management Practice, creating a unique environment designed to accelerate the pace of scientific discovery. Ideal candidates for this educational opportunity are students, who have recently completed their undergraduate education, seeking a rewarding experience in a biomedical research program before attending graduate or medical school. Working in our research laboratory, under the direct supervision of a principal investigator, the Research Assistant will be required to perform a variety of techniques in the fields of immunology, molecular biology, cell biology, and neuroscience including, but not limited to, PCR, aseptic cell culture technique, histology, experimental animal models, western blotting, ELISAs, and flow cytometry.
Candidates must have good oral and written communication skills and should be able to demonstrate the ability to work as a team. Applicants must have a recent Bachelor’s degree in the biological sciences, OR should have an expected graduation date for the spring of 2019. Previous laboratory experience and a two year commitment are required.
