Summer Research Opportunity: WUSTL Pediatric Student Research Program

The Washington University School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, offers a Pediatric Student Research Program (PRSP), open to current full-time undergraduate and graduate students as well as high school seniors.

Under the direction of three Washington University clinician-researchers, David Wilson, MD, PhD, Ashley Steed, MD, PhD and Cliff Luke, PhD, PSRP was created with the purpose of introducing research to young investigators and to further their existing interest in research. The program includes seminars and mentored research experience during the eight-week scenario, June 2nd, 2025 through July 25th, 2025. Selected participants work alongside experienced researchers. Opportunities range from bench to clinical to community-based research. Students participate in lab meetings to gain insight into the infrastructure of the research operation and to witness the collaborative process of sharing techniques, new endeavors, and successful investigative outcomes.

Applications are accepted from December 15th to February 15th.

Additional application and program information can be found on the PSRP Website https://pediatricstudentresearch.wustl.edu/. Questions may be directed to Laurie Klein at psrp@kids.wustl.edu.

WashU Pediatric Nephrology Research Program

The Washington University in St. Louis Pediatric Center of Excellence in Nephrology is now accepting applications to its 2025 Summer Research Scholars Program. This program aims to inspire future leaders in pediatric kidney disease research by engaging students in meaningful research and clinical experiences in kidney development, biology, cutting-edge technologies, preclinical model systems and pediatric nephrology.

The program is open to undergraduate, post baccalaureate and medical students interested in biological research or medicine. Start and end dates are usually the first business day in June through the last business day in July, but some flexibility is allowed as academic schedules may vary for each student; however, an 8-week commitment is required. Students will work with a mentor on a research project and will have opportunities for didactic training and clinical shadowing in nephrology. Through seminars and lectures, students will learn about the research process and careers in medicine and research.

Students will receive an approximately $4,500 stipend. Please note: Housing is not provided as a part of the program although paid housing options through Washington University may be available. A small stipend towards housing may be available in addition and will be determined on availability of funds near the start of the program.

Project Healthcare

The Project Healthcare (PHC) program is one of the most competitive and attractive programs in the nation offered to a collegiate pre-health population. Our most popular program, PHC is offered in Manhattan (NYC Health+Hospitals/Bellevue) and Brooklyn (NYU Langone Hospital–Brooklyn).

Health Career Opportunity Program

Founded by Howard A. Rusk, MD, and sponsored by the Wallace Foundation, the Health Career Opportunity Program (HCOP) has graduated approximately 5,700 volunteers throughout its 50-year history. Offered in partnership with Rusk Rehabilitation, this program is unique in that it offers volunteers the opportunity to explore the field of Emergency Medicine, Emergency Medicine-related rotations, and finely curated program activities.

Research Associate Internship

The Research Associate Internship grants students an opportunity to experience and observe multiple aspects of clinical research. Research Associates develop basic research skills and become an integral part of research projects and grants. Research Associates may be taught to collect and enter data and maintain databases, participate in laboratory meetings, and gain Principal Investigator mentorship and shadowing experiences. Research Associates also become oriented to the Institutional Review Board process for human subjects research. The current study seeking Research Associate candidates is the Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral to Treatment, Opioid Education, and Naloxone Distribution (SBIRT-OEND) study.

Applications

All programs require completion of a program application, submission of a personal statement, a current resume, and two letters of recommendation. Please note that no particular previous experiences are required. Each year, in selecting our volunteers, we look for a diverse group of applicants with equally diverse interests and experiences. More information on how to apply can be found here, while pertinent program dates are listed below. All interviews will be held virtually.
