This is a flexible program designed to complement summer jobs or internships.

What is CCAP?
Columbia Care Access Project (CCAP) is a student-run organization committed to harm reduction, care equity, and outreach-based medicine. We provide free medical services, education, and harm reduction supplies to unhoused individuals and people who use drugs in the Washington Heights community. We host regular street outreach walks, wound care clinics, and educational events to reduce stigma and increase access to compassionate care.

About the Summer Program
The CCAP Summer Volunteer Fellowship is a 10-week opportunity for premedical, undergraduate, and other health-interested students not enrolled in medical school to get hands-on experience with harm reduction and outreach-based care. Through education, service, and project-based learning, you’ll work alongside medical students to support a wonderful harm reduction program.

CU Doctors Without Borders

Interested in Medicine? Social Justice and Human Rights? A leadership position on campus? All three? Join Doctors Without Borders Student Chapter at Columbia University! All CU/BC undergraduate students enthusiastic about the club's mission are encouraged to apply for an E-Board or Committee position, no leadership experience necessary.

This student chapter was created with the mission to bring together a group of like-minded individuals dedicated to advocacy and the principles of humanitarian medicine to advance medical ethics and improve access to healthcare globally. The group facilitates a variety of events including advocacy campaigns, panels with public health experts and MSF aid workers (The MSF Headquarters is very close to campus!), fundraising efforts, and other events on and around campus!

Volunteer Opportunity: Doctors Without Borders Event

Doctors Without Borders is hosting a bone marrow and blood stem cell donor registration event in collaboration with the nonprofit organization NMDP on March 26, 27, and 28 from 12-3 PM (location TBD). They manage a diverse marrow registry, and work to offer cures for blood cancer, sickle cell, and other diseases through blood stem cell transplants. 

Please come volunteer with us! Volunteers are needed to help table and provide attendees with information on joining the registry.

Service Year Opportunity: Casa de Esperanza

Hands of Hope AmeriCorps Members will work collaboratively with other AmeriCorps Members in the home to ensure that children’s physical, emotional, and mental needs are met. While the commitment to our organization is only one year, the impact AmeriCorps Members have on the children in their care is lifelong. In turn, the children’s strength, resilience, and love will also make a lifelong impact on them.

Volunteer Opportunity: Logic Made Accessible

 Science Education Volunteer Hours Available: Work at your own pace!

Logic Made Accessible is recruiting a team of undergraduates to assist in developing a curriculum which applies Aristotelian logic to science. Each lesson plan is 2-5 pages long and can be on any subject you are interested in. There is no experience in Aristotelian logic required to start, and you can work at your own pace.

The program is entirely free and can be used by educators from anywhere. The target audience is for students between late middle school and high school. We have sample lesson plans you can look at and information about Aristotelian logic to guide you through the project.

Volunteer Opportunity: CUEMS

Are you interested in joining CUEMS? CUEMS is a student-run, volunteer ambulance providing FREE emergency medical care to Columbia University and the greater Morningside Heights area.

Ideal candidates for CUEMS probationary membership are undergraduate or graduate students from Columbia or Barnard dedicated to serving their community.

Probationary Member responsibilities include:

• Working one regular 12-hour shift each week, with two to three additional 12-hour weekend shifts each month during the probationary semester

• Collaborating in teams of three to four to provide prehospital medical care free of charge to patients in need

• Arriving to shift mentally and physically prepared to serve the Columbia and greater Morningside Heights community

Requirements:

• New York State EMT license. Applicants with non-NYS EMT licenses are still eligible to join, but must obtain reciprocity by the end of their probationary semester (see NYS-DOH for more information)

• Valid CPR certification

• Valid driver’s license

• Willing to commit at least four semesters to working for CUEMS (summer semester can be included)

To join CUEMS, applicants must attend a mandatory information session, schedule an interview, and submit a written application. Please register here for one of our two info sessions. Info sessions will be Tuesday, January 25 and Wednesday, January 26 from 1900-2000 (7:00-8:00pm). The membership application is found here, but is not due until after the info session.

Volunteer Opportunity: Columbia COVID-19 Virtual Symposium

The COVID-19 Virtual Symposium began April 2020 at the peak of the pandemic in an effort to inform our Columbia community and beyond on the latest research done to better understand COVID-19. 

Since April 2020 we have organized 37 Symposia and are now looking for new volunteers to help!

 

The Symposium is held once a month, typically on a Wednesday, 8:30 am to 12:30 pm.  

 

Open volunteer positions are listed below.  

 

1. Team Manager (1 open position) 
1. Communicate with Symposium organizers (Drs. Andrea Califano, Stephan Goff, Eric Greene, Andrew Marks)
2. Recruit speakers and communicate with them about the final Symposium agenda and Zoom info. 
3. Work with the Office of the Executive Vice President for Research to update webpage
4. Work with webinar support group at MSPH to organize Zoom links/invitation, and advertising COVID-19 Virtual Symposium to our listserv
5. Attend Wednesday Symposium to make sure everything runs smoothly

 

2. Video Editor (2 open positions)
1. Edit recorded talks into individual segments, and post on YouTube page

 

3. Summary Writers (multiple open positions)
1. Write short summaries for the talks presented and submit summaries to team manager in a timely manner

Service Opportunity: Project Horseshoe Farm Community Health Fellowship

By partnering and helping to extend relationship-based service to vulnerable neighbors, Horseshoe Farm provides an opportunity to contribute to the social fabric in local communities in a way that cuts across differences between us that can sometimes divide us.
Our approach includes an educational grant-supported “gap year” Service Fellowship that is mobilizing a generation of top recent college graduates from across the nation to serve others as they learn about Horseshoe Farm’s approach to helping others and strengthening community health. Accepted Fellows receive free housing, an educational grant of $700-$1000/month (site dependent), and valuable experience through:

• Mentored relationship focused service to seniors, adults living with mental illness, and children.
• Work supporting health providers and teachers and extending their capacity to provide relationship focused care and support to adults living with mental illness, seniors, and children in local communities.
• Direct service to individuals as a way of positively impacting the psychological and social determinants of health and learning about Horseshoe Farm’s approach to biopsychosocial community health.
• Close work and collaboration with a team of other talented Fellows and ongoing teaching and mentorship from top notch Site Directors.
• First hand exposure to and learning about health systems, health policy, and Horseshoe Farm’s approach to reinforcing and strengthening health and education systems.
• Experience with and learning about operations in a community based non-profit organization.
• Community Engagement work and other opportunities to get to know your local community.

Service Opportunity: Casa de Esperanza Year of Service

Casa de Esperanza provides residential care to children birth through six years old who are in crisis due to abuse, neglect, or the effects of HIV. Care is provided in our residential neighborhood by our Hands of Hope House Parents. Our House Parents, most of whom are recent college graduates, join us for a year of service-- a twelve-month full-time post-graduation service year. Applicants wishing to complete shorter service are considered on a case by case basis. We provide on-site housing (House Parents live with the children they are caring for) and House Parents join us from all over the United States to be part of our internship program.
