Program Description:

ArchCare at Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Care Center (TCC) is actively looking for dedicated, mature, and motivated Columbia University students from all fields of study to serve one of New York City’s elderly and infirm populations most in need. This is a hands-on opportunity for students not only to serve one of the most ethnically diverse, vulnerable, and socially marginalized populations in New York City but also to study transitions of patient care from the hospital back to the patient’s community.

Volunteers perform a variety of tasks assisting TCC staff as well as family members and loved ones, participating in unit and facility-wide recreational therapy events, and visiting weekly with an individual patient or resident as a long-term companion (time commitment: 4 hours a week). Volunteers also meet once every other week for bi-weekly reflection sessions, during which they may share their experiences as well as discuss important issues pertaining to palliative care.

TCC is a comprehensive skilled nursing facility that provides exceptional long-term care to a diverse medical population, including children with developmental disabilities, the frail elderly, individuals requiring renal dialysis, and those living with Huntington’s disease, Alzheimer’s, and HIV/AIDS.

As part of our volunteer program, you will work in a complex clinical setting alongside TCC’s interdisciplinary care team consisting of physicians, nurses, social workers, therapists, and chaplains to directly impact and improve the experiences of our patients, long-term residents, and their family members. Opportunities for shadowing our staff members in all disciplines will be available. This is a wonderful volunteer opportunity for you to give back to the New York City community while gaining practical, in-depth knowledge of how various social factors affect one’s health and livelihood.
