Barnard 2020 Committee Application

Calling all prospective applicants to medical and dental schools: if you plan to apply during summer 2020 (seeking admission to professional schools in 2021), now is the time to begin Barnard's Committee Letter of Evaluation application process.

A Committee letter is an institutional letter of evaluation that is prepared for current students and alumnae of Barnard College in order to holistically present your achievements in academics, research, clinical activities, and service to professional school admissions committees. We ask that all prospective applicants who seek a Committee letter submit an application that will include information about your goals, motivations, and background.

Barnard's 2020 Committee application is now live! To access the application, please go to Prehealth Advising Resources in Handshake and click the document labeled "Committee Application Access - 2020." You'll also find more resources in Handshake, including an overview of our Committee process, important dates for the cycle, and a link to our Application Year Overview: Part I webinar, which describes the Committee process in full.

The deadlines to submit a Committee application are:

• First-time applicants: February 9, 2020, 11:59 PM Eastern
• Reapplicants*: March 5, 2020, 11:59 PM Eastern

*You are considered a reapplicant if you have previously had a Barnard Committee letter submitted to application services on your behalf. All other applicants are considered first-time applicants, even if they have completed some or all of a previous Committee application. 

Reminder to Recent Graduates: Update Contact Info!

Health Professions Advising at Beyond Barnard uses Handshake as our means of communicating with students and alumnae as they prepare for applications to health professions programs. If you are a recent graduate who has not yet updated your email contact information in Handshake, please do so! This is especially important if you plan to apply to health professions programs in summer 2020, for matriculation in 2021.

If you have not yet updated your email address in Handshake, you can do so by writing to us at prehealthadvising@barnard.edu and providing us with your current address. If your address is not updated, you will no longer receive email communications regarding the Committee application cycle or other prehealth events and announcements.

Vanderbilt Program for LGBTQ Health Summer Internship

Summer 2020 Internship Applications Open!

The Vanderbilt Program for LGBTQ Health is hosting a limited number of students for a 10-week, full-time internship from late May to early August 2020. Through this internship program, we hope to foster the personal and professional development of future leaders in LGBTQ health and research. 

For competitive consideration, applicants must:

• Be an undergraduate student (rising junior or senior) or a graduate student (especially medical or nursing school student)
• Have a committed interested in LGBTQ health and research.
• Demonstrated this interested through previous work, research, volunteer, or other experience.

North Shore University Hospital Healthcare Exploration Program

Duration: June 8th – July 31st 2020
Location: North Shore University Hospital, Manhasset, NY

The Northwell Health Healthcare Exploration Program at North Shore University Hospital is designed to expose the undergraduate college student to various careers in the medical field. Through a balanced 8-week curriculum, students will encounter a broad range of clinical services at a quaternary care medical center.

Based on the student’s interest, students spend time shadowing Physicians, Surgeons, Nurses, Physician Assistants, and other Advanced Care Providers in the following clinical areas: Neurosciences, Cardiology, Orthopedics, Emergency Medicine, Perioperative Services, Pediatrics/Neonatal ICU, Medicine, and Cancer Services. In addition to shadowing healthcare providers, students also have the opportunity to explore the medical education components of healthcare by attending Grand Rounds. While students do not provide direct patient care,
they are encouraged throughout the process to ask questions, become engaged with the healthcare providers, and obtain their own mentor during their internship experience.

Program Structure:

• Rotations: During the eight weeks, students are exposed to healthcare providers at the patient’s bedside, in the operating room, procedural areas, during rehab, and the coordination of patient care. Students spend a week in each clinical area (Neurosciences, Cardiology, Orthopedics, Emergency Medicine, Perioperative Services, Pediatrics/Neonatal ICU, Cancer Services, and Medicine) observing patient care through the lens of many different providers.
• Didactic Sessions: As part of the internship experience, students have the opportunity to attend Grand Rounds and other educational forums, as determined appropriate by the rotation leaders. In addition, students will be provided with Lunch & Learn sessions in which a Hospital Executive will provide the student with an important understanding of the basic elements of hospital administration, leadership, organizational dynamics, and expertise from their field of work.

Winthrop-LIDA Birth Doula Project Training in February 2020

The Long Island Doula Association (LIDA) partners with NYU Winthrop Hospital and Stony Brook University Hospital to provide training for individuals interested in volunteering as doulas during labor and delivery. 

The next training session will be February 8 and 9, 2020, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM at NYU Winthrop Hospital (Mineola, NY). The cost of the training is $150. 

The hospital based doula projects provide a unique opportunity for any student interested in:

●        Gaining hands-on, meaningful, clinical exposure

●        Empowering women to become agents of their bodies and health

●        Promoting mother and baby-friendly childbirth initiatives

●        Exploring birth doula work, midwifery, or obstetrics as possible professional trajectories

Birth doulas provide emotional, physical and informational support to women in labor. The benefits of birthing with birth doulas are numerous, including:

●        Personalization and respect of individual birthing choices

●        Promotion of breastfeeding and maternal-infant bonding

●        Increased rates of vaginal delivery

●        Acknowledgement of birth as a natural process

●        Increased maternal satisfaction

Volunteers will not only gain holistic exposure to the field of women’s health, but will also be fulfilled by their abilities to affect positive change in the diverse patient population they will serve.

University of Michigan Summer Cardiovascular Research Fellowship

The University of Michigan Samuel & Jean Frankel Cardiovascular Center is pleased to announce the 2020 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program is now accepting applications!  The SURF program provides full-time research opportunities at the University of Michigan for 30 talented undergraduate students interested in cardiovascular research and medicine.  The program starts Tuesday, May 26, 2020 and ends the first week of August.

2020 Committee Application Update

Attention prospective summer 2020 applicants to medical or dental school: Barnard's 2020 Committee application will open in January 2020! We are excited to launch our new application system, and will share specific dates and deadlines beginning the week of January 6, 2020. Because we will be starting the application process slightly later than usual, Parts I and II of the application will be available to all applicants at the same time.

If you are interested in getting a head start on the application, please know that as of today you will find the prompts for the essay questions for Part II of the application, as well as the format for the Preprofessional Preparation section of the application in the Prehealth Advising Resources article in Handshake. (See the attachment titled "Committee Application 2020 Preview.")

Please keep in mind that all applicants for a 2020 Committee letter will be asked to submit their responses to these questions via our new application platform, so if you’re able to complete your responses in advance, hold onto them until you receive the early January opening announcement. You’ll be able to copy and paste your responses into the appropriate sections of the online application. I believe that you all will find our new application system very easy to navigate, and am looking forward to working with you in the coming spring and summer!

Project Healthcare Application Open

NYU Grossman School of Medicine's annual summer intensive clinical program, Project Healthcare, is accepting applications for Summer 2020! Students have an option of working at the Manhattan (Bellevue Hospital Center) or Brooklyn (NYU Langone Hospital – Brooklyn) location.

As a member of Project Healthcare students are given the unique opportunity to play an active role in patient care in one of NYU’s active Emergency Departments. Through hands on experience, in one of New York City’s level 1 Trauma Centers, volunteers are able to explore a diverse array of interests and are exposed to the reality of a career in medicine. The volunteers learn to function as patient advocates, and are also exposed to numerous aspects of patient care while working closely with the clinical staff.

In addition to the Emergency Department, which includes adult and pediatric emergency rooms (including trauma) as well as the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program, all participants rotate through the Operating Room and Cardiac Catheterization Lab to observe and help facilitate care. They ride along with FDNY EMTs, and spend time with the Social Work staff where they learn about the social needs of patients suffering with issues such as domestic violence, sexual assault, substance abuse, and/or homelessness. The program also offers community engagement events, a topical and appropriate NYU medical curriculum, and a social medicine course.

Steps to Success with the SHPEP Application Webinar

The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) is a free summer enrichment program focused on improving access to information and resources for college students interested in the health professions. SHPEP’s goal is to strengthen the academic proficiency and career development of students underrepresented in the health professions and prepare them for a successful application and matriculation to health professions schools. These students include, but are not limited to, individuals who identify as African American/Black, American Indian and Alaska Native and Hispanic/Latino, and who are from communities of socioeconomic and educational disadvantage.

SHPEP is implemented at 12 universities across the nation. Each institution provides scholars with academic enrichment in the basic sciences and math, clinical experiences, career development activities, learning and study skills seminars, and a financial planning workshop.

Applications to SHPEP are open to freshmen and sophomores, and interested students are encouraged to join the Steps to Success with the SHPEP Application on Wednesday, December 18, 2019 to hear more about this unique opportunity directly from the National Program Office and learn tips to present the best application. Register here!

Part-Time Job Opportunity: WCM Cardiac MRI Program

Weill Cornell Medicine's Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging Program is hiring now for a part-time research assistant. This is an excellent opportunity for mid-year graduates or current alumnae seeking part-time work.

Responsibilities entail the coordination of active NIH and foundational research protocols, focused on cardiac imaging and outcomes research, as well as technical studies focused on the development of new imaging technologies. The research assistant/coordinator will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of physicians and biomedical engineers, and assume key responsibilities for daily aspects of patient enrollment and coordination, data archival/compilation and analysis, and institutional administrative and compliance issues (e.g. IRB, budgeting). Myriad opportunities would be available for learning about cardiology and imaging, including attendance at clinical conferences, shadowing opportunities, and co-authorship on both abstracts and manuscripts. The position entails a broad array of clinical exposures (ideal for expanding pre-medical knowledge base) and is a great opportunity for graduating seniors/post-graduates who are looking to take a gap year and/or are able to start part-time now!  

Employment start date: HIRING NOW (part-time starting in January or earlier) or May/June full-time 2020 (slight flexibility in start if needed); 1-2 year positions available.

Individuals with scientific background and/or interest in a long-term medical research career are preferred, but not required. Minimum one-year commitment.
