The Barnard Network of Pre-Medical Students will be hosting an in-person panel on Monday, February 26 at 5:30 pm highlighting prominent researchers in the New York area. The expectation of the event is that students are able to connect with PIs and labs interested in taking on undergraduates for the summer. Guest PIs and labs will share the research they are conducting with the audience and field any possible questions they have about their work. RESEARCH ASSOCIATE POSITION: SCAN Lab | NYU Langone Health

The Social Cognitive Affective Neurodevelopment Laboratory (SCAN Lab) at NYU Langone Health (PI: Dr. Moriah Thomason) is seeking applications for a full-time SPANISH-FLUENT Research Associate. The SCAN Lab conducts research focused on social and environmental determinants of perinatal health and early human brain development. This particular position is for the HEALthy Brain and Child Development (HBCD) Study. The landmark HBCD Study is a multi-modal study, collecting different forms of data through brain imaging methods, such as MRI and EEG to investigate function in infant and toddler brains. The HBCD Study also collects behavioral data, anthropomorphic data, and biospecimen samples which allow us to measure biomolecules such as hormones, microbiota, and inflammatory markers. The Research Associate would gain first-hand experience with the methodologies mentioned above, becoming involved in direct data collection for pregnant mothers, as well as infants and toddlers.

Responsibilities:

• Serve as the primary contact with research participants for recruitment and longitudinal study retention
• Lead study visits with participants and their families
• Coordinate collection of biospecimen samples, behavioral data, MRI imaging, and EEG data
• Ensure compliance with research protocols and processes
• Track and report data collection

Qualifications:

• Spanish-fluent
• Willingness to receive phlebotomy training and collect blood samples from study participants
• This position is for a minimum of two years
• Bachelor’s degree in psychology, neuroscience, biology, or health-sciences related field
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Excellent computer skills, including expertise in Microsoft Office software (e.g., Excel)
• Experience with R and/or Python, SPSS, etc. (preferred)
• Commitment to the consistent maintenance, accuracy, and completeness of data
• Ability to work independently and proactively
• Availability for late-night (e.g. 8pm-12am) MRI visits
• Availability for weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) MRI visits

 

The salary range for the role is $50,000 - $55,000 per year.

Summer Opportunity: Camp Kesem Counselor

Applications to become a Kesem counselor are now open! Kesem is a national non-profit organization providing yearlong support and a week-long summer camp to children impacted by a parent’s cancer. To sustain their mission of serving such a large (and underserved) population, they are recruiting Columbia students to serve as student leaders and counselors for their upcoming camp session.

The commitment during the semester is extremely manageable (10-15 hours for fundraising and training), but the benefits are indescribable. By joining Kesem Columbia, you’ll make an immediate and transformative impact on the lives of children affected by a parent’s cancer - a population of more than 5 million. You’ll build friendships that will last for years. Members/alumni have gone on to careers in medicine, research, law and finance, and would be thrilled to mentor and/or provide guidance to their Kesem Columbia family. However, and perhaps most importantly, camp is FUN!

It doesn't matter your major or your background. If you care about the mission, they want your help to make the most magical week of camp possible this summer. They strive to build a team that reflects the diversity of the community we work in and encourage applications from traditionally underrepresented groups such as visible minorities, Indigenous peoples, and people identifying as LGBTQ+.

The Mentor-in-Residence program provides an opportunity to learn about an industry from an industry expert. Dr. Anne Chew, Chief Operating and Strategic Officer, Executive Deputy Director for the Center for Cellular Immunotherapies at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine built a cell therapy program that partnered with Novartis to achieve FDA approval for the first CAR-T cell therapy for cancer. She was also a co-founder of two biotech companies. Come chat with her!

UMass Chan Medical School Summer Undergraduate Research Program

The UMass Chan Medical School (UMass Chan) Summer Undergraduate Research Program is a non-credit, ten-week, structured research experience. The program consists of "hands-on" laboratory research with an investigator serving as a mentor, role model and advisor. The Summer Undergraduate Research Program is funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the UMass Chan Provost’s Office.

Program Highlights: 

•  Immersive experience preforming cutting edge research in a broad range of topic areas including: Cancer Biology, Immunology & Infectious Disease, Neuroscience, and Bioinformatics.
• Summer Research Fellows receive a $6,000 stipend. Stipends are paid to participants in three payments over the ten-week program. 
• Travel and housing are paid for and arranged by the program.
• Participants engage in networking sessions with UMass Chan leaders, faculty, and trainees.
• Participants prepare and present a professional research poster. Poster may be subsequently presented at national scientific conferences.

GlobeMed GWED-G Global Health Equity Internship

GlobeMed at Columbia would like to share a summer internship opportunity open to all CU and Barnard undergrads called the GWED-G Global Health Equity Internship Program. 

The GWED-G Global Health Equity Internship Program gives students the opportunity to be a part of grassroots public health work in rural Uganda under GWED-G (Gulu Women‘s Economic Development and Globalization). GWED-G is a human rights grassroots organization focusing on gender equality, maternal healthcare, community health education, and economic empowerment. Students will work directly under the founder of GWED-G and learn about public health community work. The focus of this internship is on helping distribute medical supplies to HIV+ positive mothers.

This event is associated with “Abortion in Context,” a new, one-time course created and taught by Wendy Schor-Haim and Cecelia Lie-Spahn. The course is funded by Barnard College, through the Fund for Innovation in Teaching and the Reproductive Health Grant.
