Job Opportunity: Research Assistant at NY Psychiatric Institute

The Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene, Inc. is seeking an intelligent, motivated individual to participate in a mouse neural circuits lab studying depression and addiction. The successful applicant will work directly with investigators performing duties as necessitated by on-going experiments. The technician will assist in: collecting data; tissue perfusion and extraction; histology; order inventory; perform other lab relevant tasks as assigned. Applicants with data analysis experience in Matlab /Python are highly encouraged to apply.                 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Mouse colony husbandry
Colony tracking
Histology: tissue sectioning & staining
Executing requisitions for lab supplies and inventory tracking
Stereotaxic surgery implanting custom microdrives and viral infusions
Building custom microdrives for implantation
Behavioral testing mice (stress paradigms, Pavlovian and operant tasks)
Scoring behavioral tests
Assist in data analysis in Matlab/Graphpad
Support on-going experiments as needed by investigators
Upkeep of  various operational records such as: animal colony database, DEA usage logs, Safety-Data-Sheets & chemical inventory
Grant expenditure tracking and invoice logging    

Applicant must have a Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or a related science and at least two years of experience with animal behavior, husbandry and stereotactic surgery. Good judgment and the ability to work without continuous supervision are very important.      
Applicant will be expected to have excellent organizational skills and be competent with computers and data entry. Proficiency with Excel, Word and PowerPoint is desirable along with knowledge of both Mac and Windows platforms.
