Job Opportunity: Psychology Research Assistant at Weill Cornell Center for Autism and the Developing Brain

The ASD and Developmental Science Lab (PI: So Hyun “Sophy” Kim, Ph.D.; https://www.kimasdlab.com/) at the Center for Autism and the Developing Brain (CADB) at Weill Cornell Medicine is currently seeking full-time research assistants to work on research studies on children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) including NIH funded studies examining early autism symptoms and validating innovative, early interventions for toddlers with ASD (PIs: Sophy Kim, Cathy Lord, Adriana DiMartino, Jim Rehg). The RA's primary responsibilities include behavioral coding, subject recruitment, testing participants with standardized assessments as well as play-based assessments, managing and analyzing datasets, and preparing and maintaining IRB protocols. Based on the previous experience and qualifications, the RA will be also trained to deliver interventions to target language skills in toddlers with ASD.

The expected start date for the position is Summer 2020. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual who would like to gain research experience prior to attending graduate school.

Position Activities

Codes videos of parent child interactions.

Recruits subjects for research studies based on study recruitment criteria.

Deliver interventions to children with ASD (for qualified candidates).

Maintains paper and electronic research and clinical records.

Organizes, schedules, and conducts clinical research assessments using specialized interviews and psychological assessment measures (e.g., cognitive testing, such as Mullen Scales for Early Learning, and autism testing, such as Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS)).

Conducts literature searches and provides manuscript preparation support.

Assists with preparation of grant proposals and IRB applications and amendments.

Collects and updates data sets including test scores, demographics, and training records.

Carries out and prepares written reports of simple statistical analyses.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in psychology or related field and related experience.

Transportation required for local travel.

Previous intervention experiences with children with ASD preferred, but not required.

Highly Desired Requirements

Experience with autism or with children and families with developmental disabilities or mental health issues preferred.

Skills and Abilities

Superior interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.

Familiarity with software including EPrime, R, SPSS, MS Word, Access, and PowerPoint. SAS, Stat, Medline, PsychInfo, and other library resources are advantageous.

Must be able to coordinate a large data set with accuracy and provide timely dissemination of information arising from it.

Job Opportunity: Neurology Research at UT Southwestern

Dr. Elan D. Louis, the chair of the Department of Neurology at University of Texas Southwestern, is interested in hiring 4 full-time paid research associates (RA) who will be involved in the study of Cognition in Essential Tremor (COGNET) to start in May 2020 and the Risks Underlying Essential Tremor (RULET) to start also in May 2020. These studies are attempting to understand the connection between and progression of cognitive decline in Essential Tremor (ET) and the environmental effects as a cause for neuro-degenerative diseases (i.e.: Essential Tremor and Parkinson's Disease).

The RA will travel within the US to conduct in-person visits, which include neuro-psychological testing and videotaped neurological examinations. The RA will learn about aspects of clinical research from study design to data collection and publication, how to recognize a range of involuntary movements, and is strongly encouraged to conduct independent research. B.A./B.S. degree, driver’s license, and experience working with elderly individuals/vulnerable populations are required. Candidates must be able to commit 2 years to the position. SUNY Optometry CSTEP Spring Internship & Summer Academic Program

SUNY Optometry is excited to announce that CSTEP Spring Internship and Summer Academic Program applications are now available. The internship program is a great opportunity for pre-health students to get hands-on experience, explore the optometry field and participate in professional development workshops and activities. The Summer Academic Program introduces students to the optometry school curriculum, while offering two credits which can be used as elective credits upon enrolling at the College of Optometry. Students may choose to apply to either or both of the programs.

The New York State eligibility requirements to qualify for CSTEP are:

• Full-time college or graduate student

Experience in a research setting with individuals with autism spectrum disorders (work experience, internship, student, training, etc.) Ability to demonstrate professional competence in research activities. Specialized training and experience in operating equipment, carrying out test procedures, and using special methods for data collation and interpretation. 

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Psychology in hand or to be obtained by July 2020. Experience with data collection with individuals with autism and/or their families. Experience with data management in a research setting, including but not limited to using tools such as REDCap. Experience with recruitment of and/or outreach to youth and families. Experience with EEG or other psychophysiological data collection. Experience working with children and/or families. Research experience. 

Brief Description: Within defined test or analytical protocols, operate equipment, carry out test procedures, as well as collate and interpret data using special methods in support of a research project or program for Dr. Lerner in the Department of Psychology.

• Running laboratory visits

• Assist with managing lab materials, ordering, and data
• Assist with IRB compliance, progress reports

Reproductive Injustice: A Salon Honoring Dána-Ain Davis Dána-Ain Davis’ new book, Reproductive Injustice: Racism, Pregnancy, and Premature Birth, is a prescient investigation into the high rates of premature birth among black women. Davis finds that this problem is not explained by economic factors but rather by ideas about race and reproduction that are deeply rooted in the era of slavery. A study that aims to undo dangerous misconceptions that have life-or-death consequences, the book calls for an end to medical racism. Health Inequalities Among the Races in the 21st Century: A Continuing Struggle in Public Health

Linda Villarosa, a pioneering journalist and author, has dedicated her career to researching stories on health discrepancies and racism in the U.S. health-care system. Her groundbreaking article “Why America’s Black Mothers and Babies Are in a Life-or-Death Crisis,” in the April 2018 New York Times Magazine, spearheaded a movement to examine the disparities in maternal morbidity and mortality outcomes, including the creation of a commission to research this subject in New York state. The discussion will consider the impact of these disparities and contemplate what the future holds.
